A few days ago, during the awful covid19 epedemic, which I'm not here for, I came across an old film from my own background.. 2007's the Mist. Based on the short story द्वारा Steven King, and directed द्वारा the same man of Shawshank and Green Mile. As well season one of Walking dead. Which most consider the best one..
I watched this for nostaglic purposes. But this is actually one of the few films to sit with me. To honestly scare me.. I watch a lot of horrors, and it's hard to really scare me, but this one really seemed to do it. It's not even really the scariest movie, but this film just has a way of deeply unnerving me. Kinda upsetting me. And not just the ending..
Thoughout the film, we see a crazy religious lady. Carmody. At first she's kinda cliche and nobody really listens. But as things become और and और bleak, the survivors slowly become a cult. She basically becomes Charles Manson.. I'm not even being snarky, it's basically like that video Backwater Gospel, she labels God as a vengeful and angry being who is to be feared not loved, and he plagued the creatures because we ''angered him'', आप know, abortions, all that hippy shit.
But this actually becomes one of the scariest factors of the film, as when she finds out द्वारा a marine private hiding out with them that this is a failed expiriment involving another unverse, that's when she really takes off. She blames everything on a innocent man who only happened to know the scientists and was never involved himself. And this actually leads to, in my opinion, one of the most uncomfortable and hard to watch scenes of the film. As Carmody and her unstable followers become truly savage, one actually stabs Jessup, even Carmody is shocked, but this barely lasts and she orders him to be a human sacrifice, and they actually do it. He's thrown to the monsters and left to die.. a totally pointless death that probably attracted और predators to the store, anyways.
I think it's all those things combined, uncomfortably real moments, those damn spiders, and just enough mystery to the creatures that really makes this film work for me.
Now, आप know I should talk about the ending.. I actually think, David aside, this is actually a 'happy' ending.. In such a cynical and morbid film, I really like the implication that humanity 'can' win..
Anyway, whatever became of Thomas Jane? I always liked him, and don't see him that much anymore..
Any thoughts, comments.. Post them below..
