Chapter 9

“ Dustin! DO something!” Kassie whimpered when he just stood there.
“ Me? Kass, आप do it! You’re a trained life guard! Do CPR!” Dustin said, his voice starting to rise just a little.
He knelt अगला to Kyan.
Kassie felt the panic start to fade. That’s right. She was trained to save people. She had taken life guarding classes for many years. She was certified. Her दिल calmed and she nodded to her self. She knew what to do. She placed her hands over Kyan’s दिल and starting pumping. She paused, placing her mouth on his, trying to force air into his lungs. She tried and tried. He wasn’t responding. She felt desperation starting to descend over her. Something wet hit her hand, startling her. She realized it was her own tears. They slipped quietly down her cheeks. She had been too late.
“ Kass, come on. We need to go get Boss. And we’re going to need to call the police.”
Kassie struggled against her brother’s hands as they tried to pull her away from Kyan’s still form.
“ Kyan.” His name on her lips tasted bittersweet.
“ Kass, come on! We need to go now.” Dustin कहा firmly, wrapping an arm around her waist. Kassie struggled for a moment, and then realized he was right. They needed to notify someone. Kassie was numb. She didn’t feel her feet stumbling along the path. She wasn’t aware of Dustin holding her up.
A soft sigh sounded. Kassie froze.
“ Kassandra. Come on.” Dustin was loosing his patience. Knowing him, he just wanted to get things cleared up so they weren’t charged.
“ Shh!” Kassie hissed, “Did आप hear that?”
“ Hear what?” Dustin answered, looking around uneasily.
Kassie wrenched herself out of Dustin’s tight grip. She ran back to where she had left Kyan. She dropped to her knees and stared at him expectantly.
“ Whoa. Kass, you’re losing it. Come on.”
Kassie shook her head. She was sure she had heard something. She stared intently at his chest. There. It rose barely, then fell slightly.
“ DID आप SEE THAT?” She shrieked. She placed her hand above Kyan’s mouth. Air barely brushed along her hand.
“ He’s breathing.” Kassie breathed in amazement.
“ What?” Dustin jerked his head up.
“ He’s breathing!” Kassie repeated.
“ We gotta get him back to the cabins so we can call the doctor.” Dustin ordered.
Two hours later, Kyan was settled in a bed, a oxygen tube helping him breathe. The doctor had just finished checking him over.
“ He’s going to be all right?” Kassie asked.
The doctor looked over at her and sighed.
“ I think so, but आप have to understand, he has a large concussion. Those boys really got after him, hitting him in the head and such.”
Kassie’s eyes grew large.
“ But he will wake up.” She stated it instead of making it a question.
“ Kassandra, I am fairly positive. But I’ve never seen someone this unresponsive with just a concussion. His body may have put him in a coma. If that’s the case, if,” Kassie’s glare stopped him short. “ I mean, when, he wakes up, he might not remember some things.”
Kassie nodded as the doctor left. She sat down beside him on the bed.
Could she handle it if he didn’t remember who she was? Knock it off! She chided herself. He would remember her. He had to.
Two days later, Kyan’s eyes slowly opened.
“ Kyan!” Kassie cried, and stood up. He hadn’t responded to her at all the last few days.
In a flash, he was on his feet, looking at her warily. Kassie shrank back a little, not liking the glint in his eyes.
“ Kyan, its ok. Its just me, Kassie.”
Kyan glared and slid a few feet back until his back was against a wall.
“ I don’t know anyone with the name Kassie.” His voice was hard and cynical.
Kassie felt her mouth flop open. The doctor has been right.
