On the eve of your birth
word of your coming
passed from animal to animal.

The reindeer told the Arctic terns,
who told the humpback whales,
who told the Pacific salmon,

who told the monarch butterflies,
who told the green turtles,
who told the European eel,
who told the busy garden warblers,

and the marvelous news migrated worldwide.

While आप waited in darkness,
tiny knees curled to chin,
the Earth and her creatures
with the Sun and the Moon
all moved in their places,
each ready to greet you
the very first moment
of the very first दिन आप arrived.

On the दिन आप were born
the round planet Earth
turned toward your morning sky,
whirling past darkness,
spinning the night into light.

On the दिन आप were born
gravity’s strong pull
held आप to the Earth
with a promise that you
would never float away…

…while deep in space
the burning Sun
sent up
towering flames,
lighting your sky
from dawn until dusk.

On the दिन आप were born
the quiet Moon glowed
and offered to bring
a full, bright face,
each month,
to your windowsill…

…while high above the North Pole,
Polaris, the glittering North Star,
stood still, shining silver light
into your night sky.

On the दिन आप were born
the Moon pulled on the ocean below,
and, wave द्वारा wave,
a rushing tide washed the beaches
clean for your footprints…

…while far out at sea
clouds swelled with water drops,
sailed to किनारा, शोर on a wind,
and rained आप a welcome
across the Earth’s green lands.

On the दिन आप were born
a forest of tall trees
collected the Sun’s light
in their leaves,
where, in silent mystery,
they made oxygen
for आप to breathe…

…while close to your skin
and as high as the sky,
air rushed in and blew about,
invisibly protecting you
and all living things on Earth.

On the दिन आप were born
the Earth turned, the Moon pulled,
the Sun flared, and, then, with a push,

आप slipped out of the dark quiet
where suddenly आप could hear…

…a वृत्त of people singing
with voices familiar and clear.

“Welcome to the spinning world,” the people sang,
as they washed your new, tiny hands.

“Welcome to the green Earth,” the people sang,
as they wrapped your wet, slippery body.

And as they held आप close
they whispered into your open, curving ear,
“We are so glad you’ve come!”

Owen had a fuzzy yellow blanket.
He’d had it since he was a baby.
He loved it with all his heart.

“Fuzzy goes where I go,” कहा Owen.
And Fuzzy did.
Upstairs, downstairs, in-between.
Inside, outside, upside down.

“Fuzzy likes what I like,” कहा Owen.
And Fuzzy did.
Orange juice, अंगूर juice, चॉकलेट milk.
Ice cream, मूंगफली, मूंगफली का butter, applesauce cake.

“Isn’t he getting a little old to be carrying that thing around?” asked Mrs. Tweezers. “Haven’t आप heard of the Blanket Fairy?”
Owen’s parents hadn’t.
Mrs. Tweezers filled them in.

That night Owen’s parents told Owen to put Fuzzy...

Zum. Zum buzzz. Zum. Zum. Buzz. Berlioz had been practicing for weeks, and now just when the orchestra was going to play in the village square for a gala ball, a strange buzz was coming from his double bass.
“Why now?” Berlioz कहा to himself.

The musicians arrived with their instruments. As Berlioz watched them climb aboard the bandwagon, all he could think about was his double bass. What if his बास buzzed during the ball? What if the dancers stopped dancing and laughed at him?
Zum, zum, buzz. Zum, zum, buzz, he imagined.

Berlioz picked up the reins and clucked to the mule. Off they went...

Abbie looked out the lighthouse window. Waves washed up on the rocks below. Out at sea, a ship sailed safely by.

“Will आप sail to town today, Papa?” Abbie asked.
“Yes,” Captain Burgess answered. “Mama needs medicine. The lights need oil. We need food. The weather is good now. So it’s सुरक्षित to go out in Puffin.”
“But what if आप don’t get back today?” asked Abbie. “Who will take care of the lights?”
Papa smiled. “You will, Abbie.”
“Oh, no, Papa!” कहा Abbie. “I have never done it alone.”

“You have trimmed the wicks before,” कहा Papa. “You have cleaned the...

(Helen's mother: "I hope that सूप is gone when I come back in there!")

The दिन Helen gave Martha dog her alphabet soup,

something unusual happened.
The letters in the सूप went up to Martha’s brain instead of down to her stomach.

That evening, Martha spoke.
(Martha: Isn’t it time for my dinner?)

Martha’s family had many सवालों to ask her. Of course, she had a lot to tell them!
(Helen: Have आप always understood what we were saying?)
(Martha: आप bet! Do आप want to know Benjie is really saying?)
(Helen’s father: Why don’t आप came when we call?)
(Martha: आप people are so bossy. Come! Sit!...

Tanya sat restlessly on her chair द्वारा the रसोई, रसोईघर window. For several days she had to stay in बिस्तर with a cold. But now Tanya's cold was almost gone. She was anxious to go outside and enjoy the fresh air and the arrival of spring.
"Mama, when can I go outside?" asked Tanya. Mama pulled the tray of biscuits from the ओवन and placed it on the counter.
"In time," she murmured. "All in good time."
Tanya gazed through the window and saw her two brothers, Ted and Jim, and Papa building the new backyard fence.
"I'm gonna talk to Grandma," she said.

Grandma was sitting in her प्रिय spot—the big soft...

Once there was a farmer who lived in Mexico. He lived in a little village, in a house which had only one room.

The farmer was not happy.
“Nothing ever happens,” he said.
The people in the village thought the farmer was foolish.
“We have everything we need,” they said.

“We have a school, and a market,

and a church with an old घंटी, बेल that rings on Sundays. Our village is the best there is.”
“But nothing ever happens,” कहा the farmer.

Every morning, when the farmer woke up, the first thing he saw was the roof of his little house.
Every morning for breakfast he ate two flat cakes of ground...

On Thursday, when Imogene woke up, she found she had grown antlers.

Getting dressed was difficult,

and going through a door now took some thinking.

Imogene started down for breakfast…

but got hung up.
“OH!!” Imogene’s mother fainted away.

The doctor poked, and prodded, and scratched his chin.
He could find nothing wrong.

The school principal glared at Imogene but had no सलाह to offer.

Her brother Norman, consulted the encyclopedia, and then announced that Imogene had turned into a rare form of miniature elk!

Imogene’s mother fainted again and was carried upstairs to bed.

Imogene went into...
