I'm not going to vote on this one because I don't want to be too biased and start up another argument.
The Sue one doesn't bug me at all; I think hating a character for being a Mary Sue is perfectly reasonable. The Sues are just so annoying, they get all of the attention, they're so nauseatingly perfect...
Even being a Mary-Sue is illogical, I mean seriously. I am not sure why you would hate a character just for being perfect? That almost sounds like envy to me. Or some sort of biased way of thinking.
Especially the "she gets in the way of yaoi". Hating someone because they get in the way of a ship is dumb enough on its own.
And although there are Mary-Sues who can be likeable, almost 93% of them are just 1-dimensional, perfect, cardboard characters. If anyone likes that, then that's fine but I don't typically like them.
For me it has nothing to do with envy; frankly I'm glad I have some flaws I wouldn't know my strong points without my weak points. Typing that actually made me realize that that's probably why I can't appreciate Sues; without flaws their strong points aren't highlighted. They're just an unrealistic blob of perfection. Makes them kind of humdrum.
@ tamore it's just poor writing. There's no reason to hate a character because of that. It's just bad writing. But of course this is my viewpoint.
But I never get this one. I actually like it when a character I like gets with someone, it's interesting to see how the character acts in a relationship, wouldn't understand why some fans want to cut that opportunity out xP
I guess more of what I'm trying to say with this one is that most flaws and (good--not 'she stole my mental boyfriend) reasons to hate a character can be chalked up to poor writing and a poorly written character is totally a fair enough reason to hate that character. To me a Mary-Sue indicates poor (or a spot of poor) writing and for that I don't like Sue characters. If that made any sense.
Zan: Ginny worst in the movies compared of in the books. But see still a good character.
Even though so called mary-sues you named probably have flaws. if I watched winx club I bet you anything if I studied Blooms personality I"d find some weaknesses. Or anyone else that you have claim were mary-sues. 9.9/10 characters will have flaws if not all of them and if the author wrote them to be as that way dislike how the author portrayed the character. Also a so called mary-sue character doesn't necessarily mean poor writing. Sometimes it does but perfection doesn't equal poor writing it greatly depends on the media. Don't use mary sues as a reason to hate a character. If you dislike a character for xyz so be it but mary sue isn't a good reason since it's subjective. Like simple said with Ginny she wasn't a bad character. Mary-sue doesn't equal a bad character. It just equals a character that isn't for you it seems.
And dont say people who excel at almost everything doesn't exist in real life. It's possible. It just doesn't happen all the time.
@Zan I believe the six movie came out around the time Twilght was big so that could be the reason she was like that.
