"I think the reason most people hate Ginny Weasley is that they tend to judge Movie Ginny instead of Book Ginny." EXACTLY. I think the only moment in the movies that accurately portrayed her personality was the moment she yelled at the Quidditch players to shut up so that Harry can speak.

Sparkles93 I agree. I think another reason people think that she's "perfect" is because we get Harry's opinion of her. It's all from his perspective. When you like someone, your perception is skewed; he can only think of her in a positive light. Many people think she disappeared and reappeared as a main character who had no flaws. She still has her flaws, but Harry sees her flaws as good things, that make her who she is, which can make her seem a Mary Sue to us. As you said, we have to look at how other characters perceive her. Her brothers, for example, find her talkative, rash and sometimes judgmental, but Harry finds these characteristics endearing.

Luna_Potter1 Hey, first of all, great blog! Also, endless respect for your opinion and taking time to pour it onto an article. I stumbled upon this on the net a few times while searching for HP discussions. My reply is that... (Note: I haven't seen the movies and I'm only talking about Book!Ginny) Ginny's character isn't interesting, at all. She was the shy younger sister of the hero's best friend in the 2nd book. She had some screen time in the 5th book but her involvement is easily forgettable. In the 6th book, Ginny is a completely different character out of nowhere. She's good at hexes, is athletic, overly popular and attractive. Out of nowhere! By 6th book, we were suddenly told all of those. Hero Harry suddenly had a chest monster and went crazy over her. They happily got married despite having spent no time on getting to know each other and building an emotional connection. Ginny's personality is pretty nasty. She's tempered, rude and can be a bully pretty often. The problem lies with how all those flaws are presented as positive traits. She's called strong, brave and badass; nobody calls her out on being a bully. Remember "Phlegm"? It was humorous. Remember hexing a student just because he annoyed her? VIP ticket for the esteemed Slug Club! Have you ever heard of Universal Mary Sue Litmus test? I've seen a post saying the OP took the test for Ginny and she scored above 50, meaning "your character is almost certainly a Mary Sue and a bad one at that". I took the test myself for her and SHE SCORED ABOUT A HUNDRED POINTS! Honestly, that's not really surprising considering what I told above. Maybe I got a little bit carried up while taking the test but I think it's still impossible to score below 50 with her, maybe it's possible to go slightly below if you force a lot but even the range of 36-49 is pretty dangerous to be in. Ginny's the description of "awesomeness" and the embodiment of Harry's dream girl. She doesn't have any interesting storyline about turning from shy to confident, she was suddenly made a Mary Sue in the 6th book and that was all.

19022001 I really respect your thoughts but I would like to disagree. No hate. The reason I disagree is because I think you've fallen prey to the misconception that Mary Sues dont have flaws. They do have flaws but the fact is they are never held back by them which is why they are considered as Mary Sues in the first place. So beginning with the flaws you listed. I find them really superficial. Your first flaw states that she is talkative. But do we get to see her irritate characters by being talkative? No. You say that she is shy and has trouble expressing her emotions to someone but do we see her damage her relationships or her popularity due to this? Absolutely not. Instead she is the perfect girl that not only Gryffindors are fond of but all the houses. This is really unrealistic. Now lets not forget that this is a girl who had to go with the most unpopular kid Neville Longbottom to the Yule Ball because NO ONE ASKED HER OUT. But two years in and she's so beautiful that even the Slytherin boys and the ones who hate the Weasleys for that matter cant deny that she's gorgeous. Look I know that some people go through an awkward phase but this is ridiculous. Its like she turned into Aphrodite. From death eaters who literally want to kill her to random hawkers, everyone cant stop about just how pretty she is. Now you also stated that she's judgemental. I agree completely. She is incredibly judgemental and bitchy but no one calls her out on that. When she calls Fleur "Phlegm" her mother gently rebukes her while everybody laugh their guts out. I might give her a pass on this if all the other people really disliked Fleur and that might be the case but she does this to just about everybody. She hexes people because they *annoy* her and gets the coveted invitation to the Slug Club instead of a detention. Her humor is mostly at the expense of other people and yet everybody around her treats her as if she is the greatest comedian on the face of the Earth. Not a single person disagrees with rude attitude. She is also a really bad friend but no one ever notices that.For someone who is supposed to be gal-pals with Hermione it was incredibly selfish of her to tell Ron that she kissed Krum. Hermione had obviously confided this in her trusting her to never tell this to anyone let alone Ron. But did Hermione go up to her and accuse her of being a poor friend and make her feel guilty about it? Of course not. In conclusion I would like to say that Ginny is nothing but a Mary Sue ;no offence to JK.Note to all Ginny fans that I'm not talking about the Movie Ginny but Book Ginny. I'm definitely not a Hermione/Harry shipper nor do I say that its wrong to love Ginny as your favorite. But there's nothing wrong in admitting that you love a flawed character either. And by flawed I mean the characterization not the character in case someone takes it the wrong way.
