Fifty Shades of Grey (Focus Films, 2015)
The first movie of what I’m sure will be a trilogy for the series
premiered worldwide Friday. The movie follows the love story of Anastasia Steele, a senior in college and Christian Grey, a successful business mogul. The two complete opposites, develop a submissive/dominant relationship due to their infatuation with each other. The movie directed by Sam Taylor Johnson is full of beautiful visuals. The settings, characters, and vision of the entire movie are very pleasing.
) However, despite the beautiful visuals the movie falls flat. The story plot isn’t very entertaining. The only excitement within the entire movie involves their sex sessions. The majority of the 5 to 6 seasons feature whipping, handcuffs, toys, oh and some ice. The hot and steamy seasons may make you squirm but by the end of the movie, you’re used to seeing Dakota Johnson’s private areas.
Dakota is absolutely entertaining and very relatable in the movie. You will fall in love with how goofy and curious her character is. As for Jamie Dornan aka Mr. Grey, he’s a bit strange. The actor does an excellent job in portraying Mr. Grey. However the weird thing he does with his eye distracted me. Also, the way Mr. Grey stalks Ana also freaks me the hell out. However by the end of the movie, you’ll become increasingly curious in his back story. Christian obviously experienced some traumatizing things in his childhood that turned him into the man he is today.
Nonetheless, between the visuals, dialogue and Dakota you may find the movie entertaining. My co-worker who read the entire series, raved about the film. However if you’re looking for conflict, action and drama, this isn’t the movie for you. It’s actually a great movie to see with your girlfriends and maybe not be a great first date movie. All of those steamy scenes may make things a tad bit awkward.
solid C. The story plot needs a lot of work, however the characters and dialogue are entertaining.
What do you guys think? Did you watch it? Do you love it? Or are you on the fence? I want to hear your thoughts.

I love the books, readed 5times.The movie was very disappointing.Dornan did not become Christian Grey after all, screen writers went on a speedy action that did not make a sense and if you did not read the book would be even more confusing trying figure out the conflict between the two of them. They will loose a lot of money on DVD,because who will buy it?,not me or all my friends.
Well, what do you expect from a movie based on a book that 1) has NO plot whatsoever and 2) is based off Twilight fan fiction? I tried to read the book but couldn’t make it past the first chapter (being generous here). Honestly, I’ve seen better literary skills and storytelling abilities in elementary school children. While reading I often asked myself how on Earth was this a Best Seller? Usually, when movies are based on books the books are almost always better and the screenwriters actually have something to work with. Unfortunately in this case one cannot extract blood from a turnip. Judging from the book I knew the movie was going to be bad when I first heard about it, so this comes to me as no surprise. I am sorry I wasted money on the book (fool me once), but I will certainly not waste my money on the movie.
I’ve seen the movie twice and read the books 8 times. Movie was tastefully done and yes, at times seemed to be rushed (plot falling flat) after the initial meetings. Dakota and Jamie portrayed the characters amazingly.. As a non-screen writer, they probably could have made this book into 2 movies and less rushed through the love angle (plot). I have to admit, waiting is not a strong suit of mine, but I’d go to however many would be needed to carry this story.
I’m beginning to think today’s generation is too ‘jaded’ and hardened by today’s standards towards ”sex” to be able to enjoy or understand a sensual and romantic book like ”50 Shades Of Grey”. The books are called Romantic Erotica Fantasies, and they are just that. You won’t find a lot of violence, blood and guts and killing in these books. This is a love story above everything else, it is two people from different worlds and life experiences coming together, trying to find a way to compromise and live happily together. She learns to please him in certain ways, and he finds he loves her enough to give up the only way he knows how to live, and live a bit in her world. This is only the1st movie, these books are a Trilogy, and there is so much more to come. My hope is that young people will ”lower” their expectations and just enjoy the Fantasy of these films. Their is so much more to the sexual act than just ”fucking”…..it’s called ”making love”.
I totally agree with you. Most people’s problem with this movie is that they thought it was a movie about S&M…People its a movie about two people falling for each other and the conflicts between them. I thought it was a great movie and would see it again.
I won’t be seeing it. I’m annoyed and disgusted by all the praise. What happened to traditional, passionate relationships? I like my sex without violence, thank you.
Not for nothing, “traditional does not traditionally translate into “passionate”. Oxymoron.
I co-sign ijs… the movie seems like it would be quite boring…especially for those who already have an exciting sex life. Oooo an awkward girl gets turned out/has kinky sex with a businessman… not getting my money
Yea the sex scenes were boring. My sex life is more entertaining, lol.
The only women who get off on this type of literary p0rn are those who are too closed minded to let their fr3ak flag fly. An open mind leads to endless possibilities. Don’t read about it…. JUST DO IT!
So you beat your partner before sex on the regular huh lol..? #idontthinkso
I think you are missing the point she’s trying make.
Yes, gapeach! I totally agree. Women don’t embrace sexual freedom like our male counterparts do. Instead we accept this type of fiction to satisfy that. Women love the idea of “Christian” but if their real life man wanted the sex he’s having, they’d refuse. Girl, live and let go! Explore your sexuality…once you do, it’s amazing!!
I think that this is further proof that the books were poorly written, and when women see their foolish fantasies come to life, it peals away the curtain to show that ….omgosh…how foolish they are.
How a book is written has no connection to how a movie is directed, one; there’s plenty proof of that between countless books-to-theatres. Some are made worse; others, better. Secondly, no s3xual fantasy, no matter how unconventional it is, is “foolish”. The only thing foolish is women still being pressured to suppress their “freak flag”.
I never thought a movie about sex could be so boring. The kink wasn’t kinky and I thought Anastasia was wooden. IMy husband and I both feel asleep in the theater. Way to waste $22!
