An interesting idea if you ask me... but not as good as the original in my opinion.

There's just something more admiral about a girl doing it than there would be if the character was a boy. Though, the interactions between the tough female general and the awkward boy soldier would certainly be amusing. xD

I'd probably still like it, but definitely less, because part of what I liked about that story was the good message it sends to young women and what a great (and rare for a kids movie) female role model Mulan is. Besides, there would automatically be less tension in the plot since there's never been a time when women could join the army and men couldn't, so a male character would be in a less perilous, so less interesting, situation. I think I'd still like the movie because it's well written with some great songs and switching genders wouldn't change that, but taking away what Mulan being a woman added to the story would remove some of the spark.

The whole point of the story is really that Mulan rises to be stronger than the men despite being a woman. If she was male, that'd sort of defeat the purpose.

Either way, it's a good story, but Mulan teaches girls that they can do whatever boys can.
