I mean...do you really consider that the modern era?

Not really. I find that the more realistic the movie attempts to be, the LESS MAGICAL the setting is, while the characters are less fun to embrace, the sidekicks really don't mesh well, and the whole concept mostly falls flat.

though i wouldn't call either of these modern - they're solidly historical, and both nearly 100 years in the past at this point. when i think modern it's stories happening within the last 20 years (lilo and stitch, toy story, etc.)

i'm really not into anastasia, but it's not because of the time period.

Fairytales are often associated with stories about Caucasian medieval princesses and love with the first sight. But I disagree with this and I am extremely glad that since 90s Disney started to make princess movies that don't fit this formula at all.

I like both and love the 1920s in particular. Besides, disney seems set on doing modern jargon so they may as wel do it in more modern settings.

I prefer Disney's classical settings over the more modern ones. There are some contemporary settings I like such as the ones in Dumbo, 101 Dalmatians, The Rescuers, and Lilo & Stitch, but overall I'm not a fan.

I think Anastasia works better than TPATF, despite being set in the same era, for a few reasons. Imperial Russia was always way behind the rest of Europe so there were a lot of medieval elements to Russia even towards the end of the Romanov dynasty. Such as the prologue celebration where the royal family is dressed in 17th century medieval wear. Not to mention the balls at the palace felt like they came out of the Victorian era, despite the 20th century setting. And while that's just the first half of the film, even the second half set in Paris works for me because Paris is such a romantic and magical city. New Orleans really doesn't compare especially when instead of the Eiffel Tower as a romantic backdrop, you have lily pads and fireflies. The Paris Opera House and the Pont Alexandre bridge are beautiful and timeless settings in Anastasia and the ending of the film also features a ball of sorts. It just feels very classic and timeless and even the ship scene feels like it could come from Titanic.
