^well, if I may answer, I think they're almost opposites. Elsa is prim (no matter how "sexy" she tries to be, she's still prim), feminine, tends to be passive, dainty, at least tries to be responsible (I know a lot of people here find her selfish and irresponsible for running away/not going back but you have to admit she initially tried her best at it), and is pretty indoorsy.

Merida is the token tomboy, a jock, very proactive, loves physically tolling activities, exploring outdoors, doesn't mind messes and isn't afraid to break the rules no matter what the consequences might be.

Most of all though, Merida is fearless to a FAULT and Elsa is too fearFUL. therein lies the biggest problem. each would most likely have each other low on their lists, if they ranked the other Princesses by favorites. Elsa would probably see Merida as having all of her sister's worst flaws amplified (impulsiveness, stubbornness) and without the love and sweetness, and Merida would see Elsa as having her mom's worst traits amplified (strict, stuffy) without actually being her mom.

I also appreciate the way you explained them as polar opposites. For some reason I think my view of Elsa was off since I hadn't seen the film in a while when I originally posted this.
