She's joyful, sweet, innocent yet cunning, manipulative and bossy. I adore her. Ariel, I like her but she is in the last places in my list because she is very self-centered and thoughtless.

It's the simple reason that I'm neutral to Snow but not Ariel. I just feel more connected to Ariel and I felt I got to know her better.

For me, Snow was always the sweet, caring person which is just nice. As I have always been a lot more outdoorsy, exploratory and curious sort person, i identify with Ariel much more.

I never could relate much to Snow's bossy, motherly nature. That was never "me." The dwarfs were cute, though. I related to Ariel, immediately, at 9 years old. A fish out of water, and UNABLE to fit in anywhere? People constantly telling you, that you were WRONG all the time? That was TOTALLY ME.

I always wonder at people who say Ariel is so thoughtless and self-centered. Isn't Tiana thoughtless and self-centered? TOTALLY. Isn't Elsa thoughtless and self-centered? Oh, my god, yes! Aren't Poca, Belle, Jasmine, Rapunzel, and Merida occasionally self-centered? Oh, yes, indeed, they are!!!! Oh, well. Just a reminder...bdumbtss.

She used to be my 2nd favorite, now she is 3rd but I still love her determined and curious personality. She is a well-written character.

I like Ariel too, but to me her flaws aren't as endearing as Snow White's are. When Ursula's brewing the potion to change Ariel to a human, bottles with *living creatures* go into her cauldron. What the heck was Ariel thinking?! And I understand she was really upset with her dad (which she had every right to be), but just disappearing on her family without saying anything! I know it's her dream to be human, and I'm not saying she shouldn't become human, but that was *really* selfish to make them worry like that.

Snow White... you don't see many characters like her today. She shows you don't have to be aggressive or "independent" to be strong. (Saying a woman has to be independent to be respected and considered strong is really ableist.) And she is SO strong. She didn't let her stepmother break her spirit or make her bitter and hateful, she pulled herself together after her panic attack in the forest VERY well, and she's as nice to Grumpy as she is to the rest of the dwarves. Maybe even nicer, since she was baking that pie for him towards the end. When she's living in their cottage, she keeps her spirits up, and never gives up hope that her prince will lead her away to safety.

And like I said before, her flaws are more endearing to me. She's bossy to the dwarves- she insists they wash their hands before eating. That's a good thing, especially since their hands were covered in dirt from the mines. For heaven's sake, they can't even remember the last time they washed up!! She was also insistent that they go to bed once it's "past bedtime", but she combines her bossiness with such sweetness and gentleness it's not obnoxious. She's secretly insecure, praying that Grumpy will like her. Haven't we all just want to be liked? She also refuses to judge based on appearances. For all she knew, her stepmother disguised as a hag was an elderly woman who just looked creepy and it couldn't be helped. These are the flaws I find most endearing. :-)

vintagelace: Thank you so much for taking the time to write everything that you did in your comment! You made the best argument, in my opinion, and I appreciate everything you had to say. Thank you so much! And obviously, I completely agree with you. I'd just add that saying a woman has to be independent to be respected and considered strong is also sexist and impossible since no one is really independent since everyone depends on someone (whether it's a romantic partner or multiple people at one's job). I don't even understand what "independent" is supposed to mean. I wouldn't call her bossy because it has a negative connotation and I would describe her more as motherly because she is stern but pleasant.
