“Long Way North,” a French-Danish co-production directed by Remi Chaye, won the Grand Prize in the Feature Film Competition category at the 2016 Tokyo Anime Award Festival.
Jury member Ryuichi Yagi praised the 2-D animation film about the life of a female explorer, saying it is “simple but carefully calculated” and “keeps (the audience) engaged until the end.”
As they stepped up to receive the award at the festival held on March 18-21 at Toho Cinemas Nihonbashi in the capital, “Long Way North” producer Dyens Ron and others talked about their respect for Japanese anime.
“Monkey King: Hero Is Back,” a full-CG Chinese action flick directed by Tian Xiaopeng, received the Award of Excellence. The film was inspired by the classic Chinese novel “Journey to the West” and broke records for an animated film in China.
Mataic Sinisa’s “Off Belay,” a Croatian-Danish co-production themed on mountain climbing, won the Grand Prize in the Short Film Competition category.
The Award of Excellence was shared by Indian director Suresh Eriyat’s “Fisherwoman and Tuk Tuk,” known for its unique-looking characters and the use of a rich palette of colors, and “I Can’t Breathe,” a work by Sayaka Kihata, who has won several awards at home and abroad for her sand animation.
Australian director Mikey Hill was given the Seiko Award for “The Orchestra.”
The winners were selected from 24 feature films and 523 short movies submitted from around the world, including Europe, China, India, Australia and Japan.
