It’s an art, a delectable bite, an addiction, a delicious way to be creative and one of the most recognizable Japanese foods that Americans consume. We all know it द्वारा name and we all know it द्वारा sight. It’s sushi!
We are all familiar with sushi, whether आप enjoy its complexities and taste या not. But, did आप know that there are “rules” to eating this food. What?! आप didn’t know there were rules that saved आप from making a fool of yourself while eating sushi at your प्रिय sushi bar? Ok, I use the term “rules” loosely. They are just suggested guidelines. Well, I will now inform आप of these guidelines so that the अगला time आप go eat sushi, you’ll have some new things to think about and discuss with your fellow patrons while there.
Alright, to dip या not to dip, that’s the सवाल here. If आप are anything like me, आप enjoy some soy sauce with your sushi. And if आप are also like me, आप just pick up the piece of sushi with your chopsticks, dip it into the soy sauce and pop it into your mouth. Well, did आप know that’s actually not the correct way of doing it? With the time and effort the chef put into flavoring the sushi चावल for you, द्वारा dipping the nigiri into the soy चावल first, can be insulting. The proper way to do it so that आप taste the flavors of the चावल is to turn your wrist and dip the मछली into the soy sauce, turn it right-side up again and enjoy. That way आप add flavoring to the मछली and it won’t overpower the rice.
Ginger is not a side dish, it is a palate cleanser. My husband likes to take the pile of ginger and heap the whole thing into his mouth because he enjoys the taste. Although आप may like to do the same, that is not why it’s there. As आप switch from one flavor of sushi to the next, the ginger acts as a cleanser to get your mouth ready for a whole new flavor. अगला time, try taking one slice at a time.
Rubbing your sticks in public isn’t polite. When आप are at home, आप can rub your sticks all आप want, but when आप are at a restaurant, it’s considered rude. Rubbing your chopsticks together shows the staff and chefs that आप think they are cheap for buying chopsticks that splinter. If आप must do it, try and do it under the तालिका, टेबल instead.
Sharing with others requires thought. When I go eat sushi if friends, we tend to get a variety of sushi to share amongst us all. If आप do this as well, there’s one extra step that’s considered polite to do. When आप share a communal plate, आप are to turn your chopsticks around to the blunt end, pick up the piece of sushi, and then return it to your own plate. That way the end of the chopsticks that touches your mouth doesn’t ever come into contact with anyone else’s food.
Try not to offer चावल to the dead. When आप are done with your meal (or taking a breather), lay your chopsticks together, flat, on your plate, with the tips going towards the left. Alright, so आप don’t need to be this particular, but at the very least, don’t stick them straight up in the rice. This is a sign of offering चावल to the dearly departed; a tradition done during a Japanese funeral. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, “Say what?” It’s not my tradition; I’m just sharing the facts with you.
There आप have it, five “rules” to think about अगला time आप are enjoying sushi in public. Whether आप decide to just think about them and not act is your decision. But don’t say आप weren’t informed (and maybe a little entertained, too). Just try not to look at the people sitting at the अगला तालिका, टेबल over and judge them too harshly for their rude eating behaviors. Jeesh, don’t they know that rubbing their sticks together is rude!? Happy sushi eating.
