And as much as I like Lisa, it is kind of random that she is the one Dean chose. He had a fun weekend with her a long time ago, then spent a little bit of time with her and her son (who he thought might be his but wasn't (or so they said)) and then we don't see her again until Dean is about to say yes to Michael and goes and tells her that the only time he had imagined himself happy it was with her. Did he love her? They never said he did before and we never really believed he had ever more than really, really liked her, but yet she was the one he went to...not Cassie, the only woman we knew for sure that Dean had been crazy about before. I don't know, maybe I am the only one who ever questioned it, maybe it was supposed to be implied that Dean was far more interested in Lisa (originally) than I picked up on...but I do miss Cassie. And I'm sure everyone is really tired of my rambling so I'll stop now.
Lisa, on the other hand, represents everything Dean secretly wants. Not just a woman, but a family. When he thought that Ben might be his son, it opened a window for Dean, allowed him a glimpse of a life that might have been his. And he liked it. Let's not forget, he bonded with Ben, not just Lisa. Not only that, but Lisa offered to let him stay for a while, seemed willing to open her life to him. And they must have made quite an impact on each during those few days they spend together during their fling, for both of them to have remembered each other almost 9 years later. Dean doesn't usually remember the names of his one night stands. And Dream A Little Dream of Me showed that Dean was still thinking about Lisa months after he left her in the Kids Are Alright. Who knows how many dreams he's had about her since?
It's not probable that Dean really loved Lisa but like he said when he revisited her in 99 Problems, she and Ben are who he pictures himself with when he thinks of himself happy. She and Ben represent family and home to him. And by once again welcoming Dean with open arms and being willing, no- wanting to form a relationship with him, Lisa offers him more than any other woman he's ever met. She knows what he does for a living and she didn't turn her back on him like Cassie did. And yeah she had proof whereas Cassie didn't but still, even after Cassie was confronted with proof, she still didn't want Dean complicating her life.
And I truly believe that over the course of the year he spent with Lisa, Dean came to love her very deeply. She was there for him at his lowest point and she didn't give up on him. She helped him through the drinking and the nightmares, opened her home and heart to him. It's because of her that Dean was as emotionally, mentally and physically healthy as he was when we saw him in Exile on Main Street.
And yeah I'm rambling too. Don't worry, TeeFly, we all love to ramble on this spot! lol
Romance on SPN = fail. [imo]
I watch Supernatural for Sam and Dean.
It spoils the story for me.
@fanfly you make some really great points (as always, which is why I so enjoy reading what you have to say on these picks...but I digress)and I pretty much agree with you. But I think the reason that I so adored Cassie (and still have a soft spot for her) is because of the way she affected Dean. She was his first love ♥ which holds a very special place in my heart for her as well, as a character, because it takes a pretty special woman to hold Dean Winchester's attention long enough for that to happen, which is evident by how few loves he has had (as far as I can tell Cassie and Lisa are the only ones that qualify, I think he loved Jo, but in a different sort of way) But back to my point. I took that episode a bit differently. Cassie sent Dean away the first time because she honestly thought he was crazy (and I really cannot blame her, as much as I adore Supernatural if the guy I was madly in love with and thought I would end up having a family with told me that he hunted supernatural beings for a living I would seriously question his sanity as well) and she was worried and confused and thought that Dean was just running away from his feelings and trying to get rid of her. And when he came back, I think, at the end, when she sent him away it was more for him than for herself. Dean said maybe one day he would be able to come back, but Cassie knew Dean, she knew he most likely wasn't coming back (and if he was it would be a long time) and she didn't want him to be always feeling bad and guilty for staying gone, didn't want her distracting him from the job at hand, from saving people. At least that is how I saw it. I saw Cassie letting Dean drive away as her final great sacrifice for this man that she would always love, probably more than anyone else. And maybe I am giving Cassie more credit than she is due, but it is what I saw.
As for Lisa I completely agree with you that she was more than a fling, but I feel less than a relationship. They both obviously made pretty solid impressions on each other during that fling to remember it so long afterward. And I definitely agree with you that Dean didn't just bond with Lisa, but with Ben. In fact, to me it seemed, he almost bonded more with Ben. I think Dean is very used to be the "older brother/father" figure having raised Sammy, and he feels really at home and comforted by that role, and Ben came along and he got to play the role that Sam wouldn't let him anymore. He got to be "the protector" and he genuinely thought (hell, I thought so too) that Ben was his son and he bonded with him, and as we know family means everything to him.
Agree, once again, that Lisa offered him the one thing he very secretly always wanted, a family, a bit of normalcy, a place to belong. And I think that really, more so than anything else, is what drew Dean in. She was normal. And as much as he pretended that normal was the exact opposite of everything he wanted, it is a very large part of what he wants. I think he likes hunting (at least a little, at least he used to) and a part of him genuinely enjoys the life, but he was tired of it, tired of everything, just wanting a place to belong. Someone to care about him, someone to come home to (besides Sammy) and Lisa came and opened her arms and let him in no questions asked, really. Offering him the one thing he needed most, right when he needed it.
And he definitely fell in love with her during the year he spent with her. I think a large part of that year was complete hell for him, but I think with having Lisa and Ben there for him, it wasn't nearly as bad as it could of been. I feel like he was able to let go a little bit, sit back and enjoy this slice of normalcy he has always longed for (and while I am kind of glad hunting came calling for him again, because he is Dean freaking Winchester and he was born to be a hunter, I am glad he got to enjoy that time with Lisa and Ben).
I realize while typing this that I seem kind of anti-Lisa/Ben and I want to clarify that I LOVE them, I love Dean's little makeshift family, I just love hunter Dean too, so I like a balance.
Also this is kind of random, but @VMars4ever...isn't Cassie Dean's only real ex?! (unless we are counting Lisa as an ex now...which makes me sad)
Anyway, I realize that I have obviously been thinking WAYYY too hard about Supernatural and if Eric Kripke read this he would probably be like, "Chill, just watch the show, you don't have to dissect every moment." But what can I say? I'm a huge (and thinking) fan...anyway if you actually managed to read all this @fanfly and anyone else crazy enough to, I'm sorry, like I said, I clearly thing about this too much.
As for Cassie, that's an interesting interpretation of her motivations. I admit I don't really see it myself. Although I do agree that she is very special because she was Dean's first love. Like you said, it's not easy to keep Dean's attention. And I wouldn't have minded revisiting her but like I said, regardless of if she cut things off for Dean's sake, she still made it clear that a relationship wasn't going to happen. So I can understand why he's never gone back to her.
I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of Dean's relationship with Ben. Dean needs someone he can take care of. He's a nurturer at heart; a badass mother hen. lol And I agree that Lisa offered Dean exactly what he wanted, exactly when he needed it.
I also love Hunter!Dean...but I love FamilyMan!Dean too. I wish somehow he could strike a balance. I mean, I don't think he can be entirely happy as just a hunter or as just a family man. And I want him to be happy, dammit! Is that so much to ask? I know the show is built on drama and angst and the suffering of the Winchesters but...I just want Dean to be happy. ♥
lol your badass mother hen comment is awesome, I'm going to remember that one for future reference.
And no it is not too much to ask for Dean to be happy! At least I don't think so. Have we seen anyone on this whole show suffer as much as Dean?! I don't think so. I'm not taking away from Sammy's suffering, but Dean has just gone through so freaking much he deserves a break right about now. It reminds me of when they were going crazy in that one episode and that doctor lady (well him in his mind as that doctor lady) asked him how he got up in the morning...well sometimes I've wondered how too. He deserves to be happy. And I agree completely about him never being entirely happy being just a hunter, or just a family man. He is both; he should be both. He deserves both. Like you said the show is built on the suffering of the Winchesters, but maybe Sam can take the brunt of it a little more (you know once he has his soul back and all) and they can let up on Dean a bit.
Honestly though, my opinion about a potential Lisa-and-Ben return would be "it depends what they do with the story-line". When their memories were wiped, I was instantly thinking that wouldn't work to protect them since the demons and other monsters could still learn about their connection to Dean. I'd have been interested in a SL involving something threatening them again to get to him. But obviously it's now way too late for that idea.
