season four ends, and it turns out one of the original scenarios would have made fans "scream".

Author Diana Gabaldon has opened up about the next season of the Starz show, which is currently in production, and teased a planned cliffhanger finale.

"When I read the script for the finale, it had a terrific cliffhanger, and I wrote back and said, \'This is brilliant. They\'re gonna scream, but it\'s brilliant,\'" she told

"Anyway the next rewrite came and they said not to do the cliffhanger. It may change again, you don\'t know."

As well as the fourth season, the show was recently commissioned for two further seasons, meaning a whole load more

However, as the seasons progress, we may see more of a divergence between Gabaldon\'s books and the show.

"I see it that the books are the parents and the show is the children," TV writer Matthew B Roberts told Digital Spy earlier this year.

"They have the same DNA but it is a different being, a different personality and if you let that thing grow you can enjoy it as a separate thing. The challenge for every season is to get it right for the TV show."

season 4 arrives later this year. It will air on Starz in the US and be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video in the UK in November 2018.
