Um only three of these are filler characters, Ayame, Sara and Souten, the rest are actual canon characters that are featured in the manga (Midoriko filler character O_o?? wtf) and have a part in the actual story line. Filler characters are characters that were just made up by the studio for the anime, and serve no actual importance to the story.

I picked Sara, because I thought that little story was cute and she's one of the few female filler characters that didn't make me want to throw a brick at her head^^ and it gave Sesshomaru a bit more screen time, so that's always a bonus with me :D Though I do wish the animation was better in part 2 :/

@sesshyswind Thanks for explaining...I think I got my terms mixed up, I thought a filler was just a character that physically appeared in the series very little so thanks for letting me know what a filler character really is ^.^

Although it did give Sesshomaru-Sama more screen time I didn't like Sara's character too much. It was too cliche...'innocent princess fall in love with evil sexy bad guy and would do anything for him' yah the episodes were kinda cute but I will never love her character fully...RIN!!

@JoJosama True, I don't love her either. I just don't really like any of the filler characters so she's my least disliked. And like I said I didn't have the surging impulse to rip her head off so, maybe it was because of her monotone and melancholy persona. I can't stand squeaky, bubbly girls that smile too much ... ^o^

It seems that there are quite a few people who don't know what a filler character is, so here I'll take it upon myself to explain.

A filler character is a character that was made up for the anime or the movies that don't appear in the original canon or better known as the manga (or other forms or original media). These characters are not products of the original creator, but were invented by artiest and writers to expand on the original story. In the case of Inuyasha, because the anime was catchig up with the manga so fast the studeo made many filler episodes to literally fill in the space so the manga can get ahead. This is why Inuyasha has so many filler episodes, and therefore so many filler characters. It doesn't matter if they're only seen once or just seldomly, so long as they are featured in the manga they are still canon characters. To know the difference between a filler character and a canon character you must compare the amine with the manga, all the characters that are in the anime, but are not featured in the manga are what we call Filler Characters.

Ok the list of Studio Filler characters directly referring to this question is:

Ayame
Sara
Souten

This is the list of characters that are NOT filler. These are are CANON characters, referred to as minor characters or supportive characters. Most have vital rolls in the story and are all featured in the manga:

Hakudoshi: (this is one of Naraku's incarnations--he's an important minor character/villain that gives Inuyasha and the crew loads of trouble and created Moriomaru--therefore he is certainly not filler.)

Princess Abi: (minor character, unintentionally helps Naraku retrieve the final shard of the Shikon Jewel--this was a vital role)

Dark Priestess Tsubaki: (canon filler-ish, the only vital roll she seemed to serve was to unintentionally assist Kagome in better realizing her powers--a semi-vital roll, though Hitomiko did a better job with this later on.)

Yura of the Hair: (minor character, the defeat of this character helped bring Inuyasha and Kagome together, is the first time they actually worked together as a team towards a common goal, to defeat Yura and to get back the Jewel Shard she stole--a vital role)

Midoriko: (this is an exceptionally important minor character--she created the Shikon no Tama, there wouldn't be a story without her--hardly filler)

Bankotsu: (canon filler-ish, well sorta, mostly fighting, though the Band of Seven did serve one vital role by stalling Inuyasha and the gang, allowing enough time for Naraku to recreate his body at mt Hakurei )

Ginta and Hahaku: <(is this spelled right?) (these are Koga's friends, they are supportive/minor characters)

Sesshomaru: (this is also an important minor character that becomes a more a supportive/main character towards the end. He unintentionally helped Inuyasha attain the Tetsuaiga, and (again unintentionally) assisted in helping him learn how to use it--this is a vital roll. Also he played a crucial roll in the fall of Naraku--hardly filler)

*in addition, one way of looking at 'filler content' (characters, episodes) is in parts of the story (keep in mind this applies to material found in the manga, and is canon originated) that fills the space or provides spacing between crucial parts of a story. To some respects these parts would be referred to as filler, therefore the characters that only appear with these filler scenes would be referred to as filler characters, however they still qualify as canon. I guess these characters could be called canon filler, what do you think? This however does not apply to characters created by the studio, probably better known as studio filler.

I think the person who posted this question should specify which definition to which this question applies, canon filler or studio filler, because it is simply incorrect to apply the same definition to both.

Yes I'm a naggy stickler, but I do it because I love this show and just feel that the characters and their places in the story should be properly understood. :p

This link also gives a good if not better description of filler. It is not Inuyasha related though, the person that posted this decided to use the anime One-Piece as a reference. It makes me think though and wonder if Rumiko Takahashi had any say in the design of studio filler characters, or could have designed them herself. For all I've seen, read and heard she didn't, but that information could be wrong. Anyone know?

Yup Banny's cool but certainly not filler (though the Band of Seven certainly felt like filler to me) filler characters can still be cool, no rule saying they aren't :)
