’s debut, Tom Verica has been a dead man walking.

In the winter finale, Sam Keating attempted to stop Rebecca (Katie Findlay) from stealing potential proof that Annalise’s (Viola Davis) husband had killed Lila, which turned into a drag-out fight before Michaela (Aja Naomi King) pushed him over the banister in the Keating residence. But a little (read: not little) tumble couldn’t stop Sam from choking Rebecca before Wes (Alfred Enoch) bashed him over the head with the justice statue. Bye bye, Sam.

“I found out the morning of the table read of that episode,” Verica says of learning the identity of his killer. “We all had our suspicions every episode. I went from Bonnie to my wife to Rebecca. That’s what’s so good about this. Initially they throw Rebecca out there unapologetically. It becomes too obvious too quick, and then it comes full circle.”

Though Sam is dead, showrunner Pete Nowalk assures

that we have not seen the last him, especially since there’s still the question of who killed Lila. “Pete has intimated that there are situations that come up that will bring me back with the conclusion of finding out who killed Lila, which I think will become the new hashtag,” Verica says. “I’m in the first episode back from the break.”

But did Sam actually kill Lila? “I played it as if I had not done it,” he says. “I like to think not. It’s twofold as an actor: I like playing against what everyone assumes, that he’s guilty by association by having the affair. From an outsider, it creates a pretty interesting scenario for the gang having covered up this whole thing and making the assumption that he is behind it. [If] he’s not, it gives a lot more interesting storytelling for their guilt that they must live with, and how they have to live with this coverup and what they’re all complicit in.”
