It was changed to the film obviously for drama purposes and I think it worked beautifully but I also think it took away a lot of power. I guess Sam, in such a situation would do whatever Frodo told him to (but turn back and followed him after all sooner or later) but really... The fact that they went into and through the dark and menacing lair together and how they did it, I think was one of the most powerful moments in the book when it comes to their friendship. Such a drama change as the film's could never come even close. I really wish they hadn't changed it. It was important the way Tolkien wrote it. Come to think of it, I think this is the only change the films made seeing to the book that I feel like complaining about.

At least they should've referd to that Sam held "dead" Frodo for hours and promised to return to his body never to depart after he'd have carried on the Quest. And so not as if the orcs came right away or as if he'd chased them only after knowing Frodo's not dead.

I like the film version of the scene but it is a a big let-down.

I totally agree with you bendaimmortal. I really loved the scene in the book because it was so beautiful how they went through it *together*, side by side.

When I found out they changed it in the film, I was pretty disappointed, but I still like the film version as well. Just not as much as the book. ;)
