Well, I'm from UK, remember? We usually omit the full stop in all the acronyms & personal titles. Therefore, St is a much more common form in British English. In American English punctuation is widely used in almost every single acronym, or even when it comes to personal titles. There are many differences between the British & the American English, not just when it comes to punctuation.
