In this article, I am going to debunk various arguments made द्वारा Dollhouse staff during the series to defend their work and claim that its nature is philanthropic.
The first defence is that Dollhouse engagements give their clients "what they need". However, in the majority of cases, a और accurate विवरण would be "what they want" या "what they desire" rather than "what they need". Some of the cases which I would argue involve genuine need would be negotiating the return of an abducted child in Ghost, infiltrating the cult in True Believer, providing therapy and सलाह to an abused child in Briar Rose and interrogating a comatose abductor in Belle Chose. Most of the engagements are simply just fulfilling a fantasy. These desires या fantasies could alternatively be met through the use of an escort service, where the providers are at least willing participants, या sometimes even just through a dating service. The Dollhouse claims that it provides a और true experience, but is it really true when the actives are programmed, and the persona will be shelved afterwards? It could also be argued that the Dollhouse's work cannot be truly considered philanthropic in nature, since it normally only serves clients who can afford to spare the $1 million dollar engagement fee. There is one example where the beneficiary is not a paying customer, but it is unclear here whether Topher himself paid for imprinting Echo to help Susan in this case. This means that the Dollhouse only helps those who can afford to pay, and not those who most need their engagements.
The सेकंड defence is that the actives are all volunteers who are well compensated at the end of their five years of service. Even in the pilot episode, we are दिया a hint that this is not entirely true, since Caroline appears to be pressured and backed into a corner in her recruitment scene. During the series, we learn that Caroline was blackmailed into signing her contract using the threat of criminal charges. We see another active, Sam, being blackmailed in similar circumstances with the additional issue of his family's financial problems and near homelessness. We learn that the Dollhouse's first recruits, including Alpha, traded their long prison terms for their five years of service. Two others, Anthony and Madeline, were recruited through offers to treat mental health ailments of PTSD and grief या depression respectively. After her release, Madeline later describes the Dollhouse as having taken advantage of her at her lowest, though it is unclear how much influence Daniel Perrin had on her viewing events in this way. There is no character who is known to have entered the Dollhouse voluntarily for the payment alone. The clearest example of the Dollhouse's inaccuracy and dishonesty is in their recruitment of Priya. She was at the time incapable of consenting to become an active. Instead of acknowledging her inability and discarding her as potential candidate, या healing her mind and then offering her the role of an active for the money alone, they assumed her consent. The scene of her being recruited from the mental health institution suggests that she was not the first या only candidate for which this assumption was made. Additionally, these individuals are likely not to have दिया informed consent, since there is no indication that they were notified of the nature of all possible engagements, including ones of a sexual nature, illegal activities and potential dangers. They were not warned of any possibility of permanent effects, whether from the risk of having the brain chemistry required to become a composite like Alpha या Echo, effects of experimentation such as Topher changing glandular functions या long-term injuries या scarring.
The final defence is that the money earned द्वारा their work, या in Topher's case his work itself, contributes to Rossum's scientific research and medical developments. However, it is revealed throughout the series that Rossum's research is also geared towards the manipulation, abuse and weaponization of minds. Their main purpose is to use the technology to gain power. Since the use of Dollhouse technology leads to an apocalyptic scenario shown in Epitaphs One & Two, it can't really be argued that the work is for the benefit of humanity.
