'San Junipero' writer wins Emmy for standout Black Mirror episode

Writer Charlie Brooker took home the Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie, or Dramatic Special, Sunday night for his juggernaut episode of

“This is terrifying,” the actor demurred before thanking Netflix and “San Junipero” actors Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mackenzie Davis, and Denise Burse. “Owen [Harris] who did such a wonderful job directing San Junipero making me look much cleverer than I am.”

The series’ creator also shouted out his co-producer, who apparently doubted Brooker would win. “Annabelle, my co-show runner told me I wouldn’t win in a supportive psychologically healthy kind of way.”

‘s third season and it is also nominated for Outstanding TV Movie. The ’80s-esque episode centers on two women (played by Mbatha-Raw and Davis) who develop a powerful relationship in the digital afterlife.

“Thank you, I’m shocked,” Brooker finished. “I’m gonna go melt this down for currency.”
