We plan every minute detail while going on a holiday. But have you ever planned about your eating pattern? Obviously, you must have, but till you reach your destination you are bound to eat what’s available while commuting which can be harmful for your health and may lead to some health issues, too. We are listing twelve home cooked food and snacks which can stay fresh and will keep you full and going.
Moong Daal Paratha is healthy and delicious bread packed with loads of proteins which will keep you full for a longer period of time. Make sure you prepare these parathas in mustard oil which helps it to stay fresh and tasty. Eat it along with pickle to make a healthy meal.
This vegetable is packed with many vitamins, minerals, low in cholesterol, fats and is easy to digest. It is one of the healthiest vegetable to cook and carry. Pointed gourd known as “Parwal” tastes delicious when stuffed with masalas (turmeric, coriander powder, red chilli powder, mango powder blended with mustard oil) and cooked. Mustard oil has properties to keep food fresh for a longer period of time and hence is recommended.
Another meal which can be made and carried with while travelling is puri which taste heavenly to eat with stir fried aloo or mango pickle. These puri’s are made kneading wheat flour, salt and oil and is then shaped into round circles and deep fried. It stays fresh for almost two days and can be relished with mango pickle.
Potato is favourite among people of all age. This vegetable if prepared in a right way can stay for longer hours fresh and tasty. Wash potatoes and slice it thin and cook it in generous amount of oil so it can remain fresh for a substantial period of time. It can be relished with Paratha and Puri.
Please note: Don’t use onions as mentioned in recipe as the sabji won’t last long.
Methi Thepla is another healthiest meal which stays fresh for longer period of time. It has goodness of fenugreek leaves, besan, flours and spices which are packed with vitamins and minerals and will keep you satiated from hunger pangs. Kids will love to eat it and will not crib on you to buy packaged food.
Fried Mathri’s known as “Suhaali” in a Marwari house is one of the favourite snack of kids. It is made of refined flour or wheat flour with spices , is kneaded stiff, then it is made into round flatbread and deep fried into oil till its crisp and crunchy. It is stored into an airtight container and can be relished with tea/coffee over breakfast or as an evening snack. Kids love to eat it with pickle and would keep asking for more till you stop offering them more.
Beaten rice flakes also known as “Poha/Chiva” tastes really good stir fried, and combined with peanuts. It is a healthy snack which is full of healthy fats and carbohydrates keeping you full for longer hours. Also its crispy and crunchy taste will keep you wanting more so make sure you prepare it in good quantity while travelling.
Please note: You can cut onions and mix it with this mixture to make it tastier to eat. Also make sure to mix it only when you intend to eat it else the mixture will lose its crunchiness.
Puffed rice flaxes also known as “Kurmura/Mudhi” is another healthiest option to prepare and carry. There are many ways in which one can eat it, some people like eating it only with salt and bit of mustard oil flavor into it, while some like to toss it with fried groundnuts, oil, curry leaves with a dash of turmeric powder to it. You can also put cut tomatoes, onions and cucumber to it to make it more healthier and tasty to eat.
If you want to avoid the pain of cutting veggies and mixing try this recipe and carry with you in an airtight container and relish over a cup of tea.
It is an energy bar packed with the goodness of oatmeal and peanut butter. Another add on is chocolate chips to it which will excite the children to munch on it immediately without cribbing to buy chocolates outside. These bars can easily last for a week if kept in airtight container. These bars are yummy to eat and easy to make.
Homemade gond ke ladoo is laden with nutritional benefits and has many health benefits too. These ladoos are usually prepared during winters to keep body warm. Kids relish eating these and it keeps them full for longer hours. It’s laden with calories but it’s better to binge on homemade snack rather than eating things from vendors. These laddos stay fresh and tasty for almost 15 days if stored in airtight containers.
Cookies are loved by people of all ages and if it is homemade you will relish it more without worrying about your health issues. These cookies are made with wheat flour and hence are healthier than other cookies. Store in airtight container and relish over a cup of tea/coffee.
