Is Chodenji Mashin Voltes V some sort of sequel to Chodenji Mashin Combattler V?

Judging the two ऐनीमे series, there’s no way that Voltes V was a sequel to Combattler V, specially regarding the characters, situations and storyline. The only thing that resembles to both ऐनीमे series is the similar designs of both super robots.
