We ask as he’s struck up a friendship with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s pretty daughter Matilde.

The pair have been spending lots of time with one another since they sat together – right behind Matilde’s daddy in the dugout – at Stamford Bridge a few weekends back.

On Sunday night, Matilde, 18, accompanied Niall out with One Direction bandmate Louis Tomlinson and the girls from Fifth Harmony to London’s Whisky Mist and Libertine nightclubs.

It comes as we can reveal Niall’s relationship with Melissa Whitelaw seems to have cooled, as the Aussie student has returned to Sydney after a stay here.

The 1D star – who has been linked to Ellie Goulding, Made in Chelsea’s Louise Thompson and Victoria’s Secrets model Barbara Palvin - and Matilde’s friendship goes a long way back – as Matilde attended Niall’s 21st birthday party at London’s Shoreditch House last September, after the pair met through the Portuguese teenager’s dad.

A source said: “Niall and Matilde have known each other for a while, but they’ve been spending more time together recently while he’s in London on a break from his world tour.

“Niall is friends with Jose, and is a real football fan, as is Matilde, so they get on really well.”

Jose – who once dubbed himself the Special One – also attended Niall’s birthday bash.

The kind footie boss let Niall use the club’s facilities at their Surrey training ground when he needed physiotherapy on his knee.

The singer required surgery last year after tearing a ligament after he was “attacked” (he claimed) by a squirrel in Battersea park in 2013.

A spokesman for Niall said of him and Matilde: “They are just friends.”
