Well, it could have gone worse. When Jaime Lannister returned to Kings’ Landing from Dorne with their dead daughter in tow, he was likely prepared for a serious reaming from sister/lover Cersei during Sunday’s
Instead of berating poor Jaime for incompetence, Cersei’s sorrow took the form of blaming an old prophecy for Myrcella’s death. And Jaime responded by promising vengeance.
Radio (SiriusXM, channel 105) to talk about the big season 6 premiere and that emotional scene between siblings/parents. “When someone you love is in pain, you want to do anything to comfort them,” said Coster-Waldau. “And he kind of goes to that moment of saying, ‘Listen, it’s you and me against the world. We can do this. We’re going to fight back. We’re going to take revenge.’ Because he’s never seen her this broken before. And now he wants her back. But, of course, he has no idea what’s happened at King’s Landing before, as we find out the whole power dynamic has changed. You have the religious uprising. It’s a tricky situation.”
Coster-Waldau notes that things have definitely been strained between Jaime and Cersei for quite a while. “She hasn’t been happy with him for a long time,” says the actor. “I think, actually, since he came back with no right hand, she kind of lost a bit of interest in him. And I think now she needs him. And I think he is, for now, happy to step up. But she’s not an easy lady to deal with.” (You don’t say!)
So what does that mean for what happens next? We asked Coster-Waldau what we can expect for Jaime coming up. “His father’s gone, Tyrion’s gone, he’s all Cersei has now,” says Coster-Waldau. “He has to deal with protecting their last kid, Tommen, who’s also the king — who is also a teenager in love, which is also not easy to deal with. It’s hard to control him. So he has to deal with that. And first the biggest enemy here, of course, is the Faith Militant, this religious uprising, being spearheaded by the High Sparrow. He has to deal with him. That’s what he’s gonna do.”
Let’s hope a Walk of Shame is not in Jaime’s future. It will also be interesting to see which other characters he ends up interacting with in season 6. We asked the actor if there are any other folks he would like Jaime to share more screentime with moving forward.
“In episode 1 of the whole [series] I had one scene with Bran,” says Coster-Waldau. “Then I pushed him out the window. And he was just a kid then. Now he’s grown into this young man. I think it would be interesting to see how that encounter would play out. I have no idea if that’s ever going to happen. I obviously hope that all the siblings will meet again — Cersei, Tyrion and Jaime — just because I think it’s interesting, that family dynamic.” Interesting is certainly a word for it.
