I remember visiting this website once...
It was called Game of Thrones finds additional locations in Croatia for Season 5 - WinterIsComing.net - News and rumors about HBO's Game of Thrones
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Game of Thrones finds additional locations in Croatia for Season 5
might be looking for additional locations in Croatia for Season 5, with representatives scouting in Imotski and Šibenik. Yesterday, local sources reported that Embassy Films Croatia sent out a casting call for citizens who are available to work as an extra on Thrones in two familiar cities, Dubrovnik and Split, and one new city, Šibenik.
Šibenik.in was very happy to announce that Game of Thrones is “definitely” coming to their city, and that filming will take place in September. Although city officials declined to make a statement, Šibenik.in claims that specific locations will include a fortress and parts of old town.
Šibenik is home to four beautiful fortresses, its most notable being St. Michael’s Fortress, which also happens to sit atop a hill overlooking the historical old town. The fortress has an irregular quadrangle shape, four well preserved towers, and a gothic style entrance.
Šibenik’s old town is described as a typical Mediterranean medieval city, with a collection of churches, noblemen palaces, and centuries old Dalmatian stone houses separated by narrow alleyways, inaccessible to traffic.
team last year, believing that their city could be the perfect fit for the series. Šibenik.in adds that over the past few months representatives have visited the city to make final arrangements and agree on a shooting schedule. HBO has yet to confirm any new locations in Croatia.
If you live in Croatia and would like to sign up to be an extra, now’s your chance! You have until July 10th to fill out this application.

According to Icelandic news site RÚV, Game of Thrones will be returning to Iceland to film its newest season, as the show has done the last few years. However when HBO\'s film …

Any news on where they will be shooting Arya/Maisie’s story this season? I cant remember if a country/location has been revealed for Braavos yet

I think Braavos is likely for Sibenik. It would be a great match for it.
I’m sure Maisie will appreciate finally getting a change of costume too, after three years.
It doesn’t appear to have any canals, but with the houses so close to the water it could certainly stand in for Braavos, with some clever camera work and a bit of CGI. It is much hillier however than I imagined Braavos (or what we saw on the screen when Stannis sailed to the Iron Bank).
I’m calling it, Old town (the place from the photo, not the Oldtown from the books) is the HotBaW
I think Braavos as well. Wouldn’t they just use a nice courtyard in Dubrovnik for
Illyrio’s? Will they include the statue do you think? Hard to tell what will be important in that part of the story.
I have a feeling that one of these days will unleash casting announcement galore.
The other day I had a dream, part of which for some reason was just my mundane morning routine. I woke up, grabbed coffee and breakfast and then went to the PC to check e-mail and WIC for casting etc…. Long story short, if the dream is accurate we will have casting news next Tuesday! XD
The idea is that Šibenik is in a bay so technically it’s not directlly on the coast but it doesn’t have canals tho. So as a Croat I can 90% say it’s Braavos.
Sounds like we had the same exact dream! I feel like a Heisenberg customer while waiting for some casting news.
Add a few CGI houses and bridges and I could easily see this being tranformed into this.
I wonder if they had it in mind when they designed the CG? That seems like a perfect fit!
Braavos is (mostly) based on Venice, couldn’t afford it?
If they use St James’ Cathedral (the one pictured in the Old Town I believe) for the House of Black and White there’s some nice architectural details.
St James’ Cathedral in Sibenik actually has ‘many faces’ along the walls.
This most definitely will be used for the House of Black and White.
It’s even got a perfect opening for the Titan to stand over!
Braavos from my POV seems to be inspired by late medieval/early Renaissance Venice. The problem with using Venice is that too much of its surviving architecture dates from between the early 16th century and mid 18th century. Think Canaletto paintings for what we see now instead of Carpaccio or Bellini paintings, which seem more reminiscent of Braavos. The earlier medieval and Renaissance was ‘modernized’ during that time.
I am so ready for casting news… the steady stream of location scouting and only location scouting is driving me insane… last year at this time the Red Viper had been cast and we all knew about it!
Aye, but the year before we didn’t get anything til Comic Con. That’s the yard stick I measure casting news by. If we haven’t heard anything after that, then I’ll start raging.
Thanks for that reminder. It actually takes a little of the edge off to have a new “deadline” to look forward to. Even if it is three weeks away…
Young Griff does not have blue hair in the series? Or should he be introduced with white hair (assuming he’s the real you know who)
Let’s not forget how apeshit a good many of us got reacting to that particular casting. This website blew up with all sorts of outrage and bullshit and in the end it was all for nought since Pascal did a superb job. I really want some casting news too, but I don’t think of the Oberyn casting news as having been a good moment for the fandom, since lots of us reacted so nastily to it.
I bet some of the forthcoming news will be met with unwarranted venom and ire too. Seven save us.

Pedro Pascal gave a big fuck you to those that doubted him and complained. I do that almost every time on this site and shake my head at all the whiners complaining about everything.
I understand that people get upset when the actors they want for a role are not chosen, but the whole debate over the ethnicity of actors and characters does get really ridiculous. I wish I could say that we won’t get that this year, but we already got inklings of it in the s5 casting page here a month ago. Thankfully, the prospect of getting new cast members for s5 makes me happy enough to stomach some of the more annoying comments here.
I agree, I’m sure there will be some negativity around casting once again. For the most part I think it’s unavoidable with a passionate (many overly so) fanbase…..
Like you, I am so over the ethnicity and skin color debate and the various parties instigating. Truth be told, it’s the main reason I don’t visit the site or comment as much as I used to. I love debate and hearing different viewpoints, but the abrasive and childish bickering over casting speculation or actual casting news saps the excitement and joy right out of me!
I love fan-casting roles, but it’s rare I get upset once a role is cast officially. Take Pedro Pascal as an example. I was more shocked they picked another American (born in Chile I know, but still…) more than the actor himself. I had seen Pascal in 2 or 3 projects and almost immediately thought he could do the job.
Then when production started I was once again thrown by the physical changes… The Red Viper having a beard and short hair! I was a bit miffed, but I accepted it since I had dealt with or even liked many of the other physical changes from book to screen. I rolled with it, however even if I expected Pascal to be good I never imagined he would be so spectacular in the role!
Here’s looking forward to some more surprising cast additions that turn out to be different and much better than expected!

I could understand if they didnt have blue hair for young griff (if they keep him in the show) since it would look quite weird on screen, and although the shown hasnt shied away from some of the more violent scenes from the books, it hasnt been as enthusiastic about some of the more unusual stuff. Look at a picture of Daario from the books, and then him from the show, and you’ll see that it wouldnt be the first time D & D have shied away from blue hair. Which I’m fine with, i didnt care about daario’s lack of blue hair or stuff like that nearly as much as others in the fandom. That said, having him have silver targ hair from the start wouldnt be a good idea as it wouldnt make much sense for him not to dye it, and it would give the spoiler away immediately upon meeting him. So i would still like to see his hair dyed, or have him wear a wig, or something like that to make it obvious that we havent seen his natural hair.
I think geographically, Oldtown would make more sense for this, as it is in the far south of westeros, but if you look at Braavos it is level with the Vale, the Riverlands and the Iron Islands. Doesnt neccesarily rule this out as Braavos though, cos maybe it would do a better job standing in for, it, like portraying the canals, etc, but i think Northern Ireland or Iceland would be the more likely location for Braavos, although I dont know of many places in NI that could stand in as a medieval city in NI, and they have already confrimed they will not be shooting acting in Iceland
I guess it could be used for Braavos, but honestly, why don’t they just go to Venice and film in places that aren’t immediately recognizable? Anyway it could also be used for White Harbor, that first gloomy picture fits perfectly.

Thanks. I honestly wouldn’t mind if introduced with Targ hair from the jump since it will still raise questions on who he is. I suppose a wig would work on screen better.
I wonder who will be cast for that role, I feel it can either be the most important cast of the series if Vary’s is indeed telling the truth.

Crosses fingers that this is the location for White Harbor.
Just listen to white Harbors’s description of New Castle from the wiki:
“The proud and pale New Castle is built atop a hill rising above the city’s thick white walls. The merman sigil of House Manderly flies from its towers. The broad, stepped Castle Stair is a white stone street that leads from the Wolf’s Den up the hill to the New Castle. There is a clear view of both of the city’s harbors from the hilltop.”
