9. Pocahontas II Journey to a New World
"I really never understand why a lot of people think that this is one of the better Disney sequels because I honestly consider it one of the WORST! The story is a serious downgrade and underwhelming compared to the original (The same way that the sequel to The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 was to the original), the songs are either unmemorable or a bad repeat of A Girl Worth Fighting For, it just barely qualifies as a musical, the message is horribly done because it's not just being forced to marry because of stupid tradition because the entire fate of China depends on this arranged marriage and that throws in something really serious, the conflict of the arranged marriages and being able to marry who they want was solved WAY too easily and not convincing AT ALL just like they did with Brave, Mushu becomes absolutely DESPICABLE, Shang becomes an asshole, Mulan becomes a forced follow your heart PSA and a stereotype of herself from the original movie and not entertaining at all, Mulan and Shang argue over little and petty things even when Mushu isn't trying to get them to that inforce gender stereotypes (Which is what the original movie was trying to go against), it's cheesy and forced, and the movements in the animation are so awkward.
Don't get me wrong, the animation is obviously good animation because the color palette is beautiful and the lines are smooth but the movements and expressions are awkward as hell. One particularly awkward moment was when Shang was yelling at Mulan after believing that Mulan was talking bad about him with the princesses outside his tent (If someone was going to gossip about you behind your back, that would be that last place they'd do it, you idiot). By gosh does that look awful! The expressions are too overly expressive and rubbery. The characters also don't look as mature as they did in the first movie. The movie also just completely lets China suffer because FOLLOW YOUR HEART! The planned third movie was actually supposed to deal with the consequences of that but the Disney stopped making Disney sequels and I guess we can just assume that they all died because of their f*cked up actions. In fact, watch the Nostalgia Critic's Disneycember review of this piece of sh*t because it basically sums up how I feel about it, with some disagreements. Also, this is the last sequel where I'm going to be using the Nostalgia Critic to explain how awful I think it is in this countdown.

I also just feel like talking about my next choice, which is Ariel's Beginning! It's not as awful as Mulan 2 but it is still really terrible and proves that animation doesn't make a movie good or bad. The whole music banned plot is idiotic and lame, the waste a perfectly good opportunity with doing a prequel to The Little Mermaid, Ariel's mother died in a stupid way (But I do like that were responsible for it), they focused more on the music being banned and ignored Athena being killed because of humans, the villain is lame and unmemorable, it was stupid that they didn't have the villain of the movie be Ursula because she said herself that she used to live in the palace, Flounder is the polar opposite of who he was originally, Sebastian would NEVER have a secret organization that is against Triton, the voice actor they got for Triton doesn't suit him at all, Triton is absolutely horrible in this movie and even worse than Rapunzel's father in the Tangled TV series, Aquata and Andrina are the only one of Ariel's sisters that are interesting (I even made my own article giving Ariel's sisters more fleshed out personalities because this movie did a poor job at that), the villain song is stupid (Also, how did Triton not figure out she was breaking his law with how she was doing the same a big musical number TWICE when music is BANNED), and the entire film is a style of substance thing. What people like are the songs, gorgeous animation, and other shallow things about the movie that is clearly unfaithful to the original movie and doesn't even follow the continuity of the original movie. The TV series is the FAR superior prequel and is better in every area except for the animation.
Return to the Sea was more creative, faithful, and original than Ariel's Beginning and it was literally just a remix of the original movie. But I do love the concept of Ariel having a daughter that was in love with the sea and wanted to be a mermaid. That is a genuinely interesting and creative idea, even if the execution isn't very well-done. But I still love the movie as a guilty pleasure despite being mediocre at best. Plus, Melody is tied with Jack Frost as my favorite fictional character of all time."
I don't think giving a DP a daughter and making her a protagonist was a good idea.
Also, Enchanted Christmas with that awful cartoon organ trying to take over Adam/beast's mind was "lame."

Don't get me wrong, the film is flawed! They didn't use this really interesting concept to the fullest of its abilities, it's basically the original remixed without anything really new, Tip and Dash are abominations, they should've had Melody's friends be merpeople to show the contrast of how she interacts with merkids compared to human kids, and Eric is basically reduced to furniture. It's not good but not bad and not anywhere near the worst of the Disney sequels or even of the Disney Princess sequels. It at least tries to keep most of the characters true to themselves than Ariel's Beginning, especially with how that prequel destroyed Flounder, Triton, and Sebastian.
@wavesurf When was the last time you saw the movie because Melody blames herself for everything, not others. She blamed Morgana for a moment but soon after blamed herself. Sure she'd get frustrated with her mother but she had a right to. I mean, if she blamed others, she would've blamed Sebastian for ruining her party but she didn't. She blamed herself and questioned what was wrong with her and described herself as "the princess of disaster." I don't know what movie you've been watching but never did Melody, other than that one time with Morgana, ever blame anyone but herself. She doesn't act like everyone is against her, if anything, she's more against herself than acting like others are against her. Sure, she got mad at Ariel but it was understandable. Just putting my two cents in and not trying to start a fight or anything.
We had an argument about this last December, or the December before. You have love for her, and I hate how she treats her mom ( Ariel). Let's just move on. I'd rather not explain again why I think Melody is too similar to Elsa. (And I don't like Elsa, either). FYI, I wrote all of that out once, and left that in the unpopular opinions section a while ago.
It's like I keep saying it's fine to hate a character, it's just unfair to make these kind of assumptions
I'm supposed to support a character who projects her own anger, fears, and problems onto others? NOPE. Triton did that. Belle did that also. So did Elsa and Merida.
Nope. I will always dislike characters who "off-load" their personal feelings and don't "own" their own problems.
Melody is incredibly whiny, and scapegoats her fears and problems onto her mother because--- rather than admit that she is socially awkward, and work on her own communication skills, plus other skills----it is more convenient for her to seek the sea, to fume and just blame somebody else, even if that somebody else had every worthy reason to keep a secret involving her own safety ( whereas Triton didn't have a legitimate threat from humans, Ariel did because Morgana pulled a Maleficent at Melody's christening, and said so).
Melody does deserve her place on the low end of my perspective. I agree with Rotten Tomatoes where the audience rated TLM II only a 45% because of Melody and other problems.
Triton does have a legitimate threat from humans because humans are a threat to the fish and merpeople. I didn't even need to watch Ariel's Beginning to understand that. Was Triton still right to destroy Ariel's collection? No! But at least he gave an actual reason for not liking humans other than Ariel who pretty much was like "Let's make this huge wall, just say the ocean is dangerous, and be done with it. La la la"
When things went south at her birthday party, Melody could have easily blamed Sebastian but instead she makes sure he's okay and blames herself for being the "princess of disaster" She also could have blamed her mom for inviting kids who bully her but she didn't. It's never ONCE brought up. When Melody got mad at Ariel in the climax it was because Morgana manipulated her into thinking Ariel was against her
Let me just say, that I won't be a fan of The Little Mermaid II, nor will I ever believe Melody's laundry list of complaints, because Melody seemed to not believe what ANYBODY said until Morgana came clean and showed Melody what her real intentions were.
You can love her/like her if you want. I don't, and won't. In my opinion, Melody doesn't decide to do anything to help herself. Like Elsa, she blames a family member for everything that goes wrong, runs away, and makes it all worse.
Morgana then had to teach Melody the rest, just as Ursula taught Triton and Ariel. Irony.
I'm done with Melody.
Melody: [crying] What's wrong with me?
Ariel: Oh, sweetie, nothing's wrong with you.
Melody: Mom, I'm the princess of disaster!
Ariel: Being a teenager is hard, and, uh, all kids your age feel... awkward, and...
Melody: [looking at her locket] "Melody?" What is this? My name's on here. [Melody opens the locket and a lullaby plays] That song. Where have I heard it? It's Atlantica, with merpeople and everything. Mother, you always said it was just an old fish tale.
Ariel: [snaps the locket shut] Where did you get this?
Melody: I-- I found it.
Ariel: [upset] You went over the wall, didn't you?
Melody: Actually, I went under it. I hate that stupid wall.
Ariel: Melody, you know you're not allowed in the sea!
Melody: But why? And why does that necklace have my name on it?
Ariel: Melody, listen to me.
Melody: You're hiding something from me.
Ariel: You deliberately disobeyed me! I never want you going out there again. Do you hear me? It's dangerous in the sea!
Melody: How would you know? You've never even been in it! [rushes out in tears]
Where does she say she blames Ariel? In fact, here's a script and you can show me when Melody supposedly "blames everyone for everything" link It's all dialogue but I'm sure if you know what Melody says then it shouldn't be a problem to find it
In fact, I remember you saying this about Elsa but it turns out you completely misunderstood what Elsa had meant. And why even bring up Elsa when literally no one was talking about her in the first place? Not everything has to involve Frozen or Elsa or Anna
