Also, I find her a little whiny and self-pitying in Reflection. She's basically complaining that nobody thinks she's wonderful, but why would they? She doesn't in the beginning put much effort into anything she does; she takes shortcuts because, well, she's lazy. Also, while fans constantly insult other DPs in order to praise Mulan and how independent and tough she is, she got a ton of help with it all. Also, this is more of a fandom thing, but it annoys me that she's so praised for being strong and independent when she was wiling to marry a stranger for her family. Not because I don't think it was selfess, but Aurora gets knocked for the same thing all the time.
So while none of this is really bad in a character, it's not very interesting to me either (not to mention, the rabid misogyny from a good chunk of her fandom is a big turnoff, even though she herself isn't to blame for that), leading her to stay in my bottom 3.
Just because you don't relate to Mulan's personality, doesn't mean that other princesses don't get help, and aren't BLAND. I really don't get how you can single out Mulan for the VERY SAME THINGS ( tantrums ( Tiana and Merida), pity-partys ( Belle throws a lot of them, and so do Aurora and Ariel), selflessness ( Belle is NOT more selfless than Mulan, oh God, no!, and neither is Moana), and needing male help ( EVERY DANG FEMALE IN DISNEY HAS MALE HELP!!!!!!)
So to say that Mulan gets help --- and that makes her a worse character--- is just blatantly IGNORING all the TIMES other Disney characters GET HELP achiving their dreams and overcoming obstacles. What a COMPLETE LOAD of rubbish, Audreyfreak.
Also, most of the other girls don't get praised as she does for being totally self reliant/strong/independent so that's a faulty comparison. Quite the opposite, Snow, Cinderella, Aurora, and often Jasmine and Elsa are called weak and need rescued.
Seriously, this is why fanpop loses fans. Some of you are completely rabid when faced with opinions you don't like and overreact. It drives people away. Learn to tolerate differences.
If you had said, "I find her bland and don't relate to her personality at all" then that would have been a true statement. But the rest of your argument is not accurate.
Me tolerating differences of opinion is not something you get to decide. I tolerate people bashing ariel all the time. But using misinformation about any princess is not going to get me to give your post a pass.
I never saw reflection as a pity party, I saw it as Mulan being upset than she fails to live up to others expectations and she feels conflicted - she takes shortcuts to impress her family in the beginning because part of her wants to be true to herself so if she wants to impress her family by getting married she wants to do it her own way. But it doesn't work so she feels like even by being herself a little bit, she fails. that's a heavy burden and one I relate to.
I think Mulan and auroras marriage situations were totally different , Aurora didn't have a lifetime of pressure to get married and honor placed on her.
Mushu does provide the initial push for Mulan with training but she takes charge after that and every plan after that is orchestrated by her.
What I will say is Mulan is almost infallible and I didn't like when she beat Shang in fighting and also ran ahead of all the soldiers during training - then we are stepping into territory I don't like, making a woman almost superhuman in her strength because filmmakers think it's a character quality. It's unrealistic she would suddenly become the star soldier in that regard because she wouldn't outpace all the others. And yes, by the end she's still a bit subservient considering she still only cares about impressing her dad and doesn't value her great accomplishments unless her dad does. These are things that slightly bother me because she was supposed to learn that she was good enough for herself.
I think a good point is made that sometimes Mulan is compared to the other princesses as being better because she was more of a hero, but that's a fandom problem and doesn't affect
my opinion of her.
I think Mulan has a bit of stock kick-butt personality but I still adore her and in certain respects find her very unique. I also think she has a big ego, proven when she decides to stay in camp after she gets kicked out and when she ignores orders several times (which I love, personally, but I can see how it would annoy others) .
also, don't let wavesurf ruin fanpop for you :)
also pt 2: in the poll title, "lower" than what?
Anyways, i admire her a lot. She's modest, learns from her mistakes and feels like a normal person who is troubled in life with societal expectations and her struggle to rise in it through unconventional ways.
