वाद-विवाद The Great वाद-विवाद of April 2008

Cinders posted on Mar 11, 2008 at 04:51AM
Topic: Should prostitution be legalized in the United States?

Context: As the last two Great Debates chosen by the general Debate Spot population failed, I decided to choose this one myself. As prostitution is an interesting but underdeveloped debate at this debate spot, I felt we could explore it a little more here.

Debaters:
Cinders (Affirmative)
mac (Negative)

Judges:
hooch-is-crazy
amazondebs
dazl

Moderator:
Gstine

Winner of the number game chooses the side s/he wants to represent. If the other debater decides they cannot do that side justice, s/he can resign but ONLY IMMEDIATELY AFTER learning what side they are representing. Debaters (including myself) by agreeing after the sides are chosen "sign" a non-abandonment contract that gives their word that they will not abandon the debate in the middle. If they do, it is a forfeit and their opponent will have won.

-------

RULES

The debate question will be posed in a "For" or "Against" fashion, or "Affirmative" and "Negative." That is, debaters will either agree or disagree with its statement.

The format will be as follows (I will introduce and elaborate on each section when we come to it):

Format of the Great Debate:

1) Affirmative: Give opening statement
2) Negative: Cross examines/addresses flaws, or issues in For's argument and asks For questions.
3) Affirmative: May respond to cross/answer questions (MUST answer all questions).
4) Negative: Give opening statements (Repeat steps 1-3 in opposite order)
5) Affirmative: Give closing statement (will elaborate on this later).
6) Negative: Give closing statement (may not respond to For's closing statement).

The moderator will make sure no one steps out of line, and will "give the floor" to the debaters.

The judges will NOT participate in the debate, and will come into the debate with little opinion and/or previous knowledge of the subject. The judges will determine who should win the debate based on their persuasive skills and argument alone, not based on topic matter.

The Affirmative begins with an opening statement, which is a few paragraphs including proofs and supports for why the debate prompt is accurate. Proofs can include relevant examples, statistics, expert quotations, historical trends, etc. You may use pathos, ethos, and logos, that is to say you can appeal to our morals, emotions, and sense of logic in any way you see fit. The Affirmative's opening statement is different from the negatives in that it should provide an alternative plan to stand against the status quo (the question will generally pose a change to the current status quo).

Your opening statement should be around five hundred words, but we won't be counting. If you feel you can say it all in three hundred words, or if you feel you need seven hundred words, then that's fine. The only reason I'm giving you a word count is in case you want a guideline. Take as many words as you need, and as much time as you would like to organize your response (though preferably respond by the end of the week so we can keep the debate going). This is a generous allowance designed to encourage quality in an argument, as in actual verbal debates, opening statements are timed and cut off if they go past three minutes, and it's embarrassing to end after only two minutes.

:o) Remember! This is all in good fun. If you find you aren't enjoying yourself, then you can drop out at any time, but if you're a debater, you will be ceding your title over to your opponent.

WINNERS: Yes, I have decided there will be a prize for the winner: A banner/image/certificate that will be uploaded to the image section of this spot celebrating the fact that they one Fanpop's first ever structured debate. Hopefully, if this goes well, we'll have more debates and more people can win.

If anyone wants to design this banner/image/certificate please contact me. If no one contacts me, I'll design it myself.

In addition to the above, if you drop out of the debate, or don't respond for longer than three weeks, you are disqualified, and the last person who debated wins by default.

Kegel, dazl, I have not forgotten you. Your prizes can be found in the "images" category on this site.

hey i would love to do it

as i am normally the debator or modorator (that's like the chair, right?) i would love to be a judge
but i have heard that you had trouble rounding people up last time so i'll do anything really, i'm not fussed :)

I'll judge or moderate, because I don't have time to debate this time round.

Swell, we have two judges or maybe a moderator. Come on, folks, you voted to keep this thing going in the pick, so help keep it alive!

I'll judge or moderate if you need me.
एक साल  से अधिक पुराना Cinders said…
Great. The majority of you will probably be judges. It would be helpful if someone would just volunteer to moderate so I can put names in instead of question marks.

We either need one more judge, or we still need a moderator. We also need a debater.

can i judge? i'm not exactly sure what a moderater does(is it like the chair, as debs said?)

Great, hooch, someone with a mind made up! Now which of you ladies who volunteered to maybe moderate choose to do so?

Note: We just need a debater now!

EDIT: About moderating: It is like the chair. If anyone here is familiar with the past two (failed) debates, then they remember I was moderator last time. Since debaters are harder to find, I decided to be a debater this time around.

The moderator introduces the topic and makes sure everyone plays fairly. They follow the structure of the debate and "give the floor" to the debaters. They are also in charge of creating the award for the winning debater. The moderator has no say in who wins the debate. That is decided by the judges amongst themselves.

Example:

Moderator: Welcome Fanpoppers to the April 2008 Great Debate. The question: Should prostitution be legal in the united states. Our debaters: Cinders and (I'm not signing you up, but) MajorDork74. Our judges: amazondebs, hooch-is-crazy, gstine. I am your moderator. The affirmative has the floor. Please give your opening statement, MajorDork/Cinders.

Affirmative: [Gives opening statement]

Moderator: Thank you, "Affirmative Debater." "Negative Debater," you may now cross examine the Affirmative. Please ask only relevant questions.

Negative: [Cross examines]

Moderator: Thank you, "Negative Debater." "Affirmative Debater," you may respond to the cross. Please answer all questions.

Affirmative: [Answers cross. Forgets a question]

Moderator: Affirmative, you forgot to address [insert question here]. Please answer the Negative's question.

Etc, etc, etc.

Cinders, are you for or against. As depending on which one I might take the other side.
एक साल  से अधिक पुराना amazondebs said…
it is just a debating competition though, the side you choose doesn't have to necessarily be the side you believe in though does it?

and just two more questions, do us judges confer with one another? and do we send our answer to Gstine or just post them on the forum when it's done?
एक साल  से अधिक पुराना Cinders said…
Yes, you're right:

How things work to determine sides: The moderator chooses a number between 1 and 10 and tells at least one if not all of the judges what it is to avoid favoritism (not that you would do that, Gstine) and then the debaters pick their numbers. Whoever wins the game chooses the side they want to represent and the second debater gets the other side. So if I want to represent a different side than you, J, the number game doesn't really matter. It only really matters if both debaters want the same side. So if you did want the same side as me, I would debate the other side, and accept that. I'll give you a heads up, though: if I won, I would choose the affirmative side. But if you won and choose that side, I could argue the negative just fine. Nuimdave was very good about that last time around... Until he disappeared.

And debs, after the debate is finished (if we ever get to that point), the moderator will ask the judges to confer, which they should amongst themselves.

Individually, since it's based on skill, not bias, if you want to make it easier to decide you can each "rate" the different arguments on a scale (1-5, 1-10, 1-20, which ever you feel is appropriate) and add up the number. Or if you prefer simplicity, you can just choose who you liked best based on who you feel was more persuasive. Or you can just chat about it with the other judges. But just compare the arguments and come to your conclusion. You can discuss with the other judges, but not the moderator. When you are finished, you can either tell the moderator your decision or you can choose a delegate amongst yourselves to announce who you three decided the winner should be.

Aw, dammit. I was TOTALLY planning on playing favorites.

If only it were so simple, Dara.

Tell you what. If no one replies, I'll take you up on the offer. Hell, it would be an interesting conversation:

Debs: They both made good arguments...
Hooch: I'm a little torn, dazl, what do you think?
Dazl: I WIN I WIN I WIN I WIN!
Debs and Hooch: Yeah, sounds good to me.
