Community Movie 'Will Happen,' Series Creator Dan Harmon Declares

, the creator of the cult sitcom told the host that the NBC-turned-Yahoo Screen series “would make a great movie,” adding, “It will happen.” He hesitated, however, to lay out a specific timeframe for the theatrical follow-up.

“If I pull out a typewriter right now and write a Community movie just for my own heart and mind, then I have to go through the heartbreak and agony of finding out which of the people are going to show up to make it,” Harmon said. “On the other hand, if I wait for everybody to line up and say ‘we’re all out of work and ready to do a Community movie,’ then I guess that’s a bad idea, too.”

He hasn’t even written it yet, but that’s somehow the fault of the cast, who took other jobs, rather than agree to do a movie that hasn’t been written? That’s crazy.

Fault is too strong a word. Basically he’s saying he needs to know exactly who will be in and who won’t be, since covering up for anyone he planned to appear but can’t make it can be tricky. Arrested Development hit this snag with Netflix, and Doctor Who runs into this problem a lot whenever they want to bring back big groups of former cast.

I’m positive you’re projecting. Not anywhere does he fault the cast for what he calls their awesome careers. He’s merely saying he’s afraid to write something without a timeframe because almost everyone involved is currently working on other projects.

The entire third paragraph of this article is a quote where Harmon ties writing the script to cast availability. He says “it will happen” in the second paragraph, but he casts doubt later, and the only factor he lists to cast doubt on it is the cast.

Whether you agree with me or not about the cast, “it will happen” and “there is no script” are incompatible statements.

Would love it sooner rather than later, though I totally get if that’s just not viable.

First, this won’t be a marvel action film that takes 3 months to film. It can be done in around 6 weeks. A movie would basically be 4 episodes, so 6 weeks would be ample time. Almost all these actors have shows with easily built in hiatuses, and that’s assuming Pudi and Joel see their shows continue on beyond next year.

Second, a wait would be good. Let Harmon work on the script and refine it. I loved Community, but it had some flaws. The “A” story was usually outstanding. The “B” story was, all too often, somewhere between horrible and extremely horrible. When all the cast was focused on the same plot, with no “B” story, those were frequently the best shows. A movie would allow him to refine the script. He’s a great writer, and having a lot of time to refine the script would be good for him.

Third, the basic premise writes itself. Reunion. In five or so years they could make it a 10 year reunion for the class, or a five year, or some random number like 8 year reunion just to be funny. What he does after that would be up to him, obviously.

All the above said, he probably needs to hurry more than he thinks. Community is already barely airing in syndication. Within the next few years, it will be off the air completely. From that point, it will be hard to get funding. I know the actors love the show, and would want to do it, but still. None of them are, or are likely to be, stars, but they are in demand actors. For most, it is just in supporting roles, but actors can do a ton of such roles in a given year. It will be hard to justify turning down 1-2 projects, both likely to be fairly lucrative, for 6-10 weeks of relatively low paid work. IDK if the window on this is as large as Harmon thinks.

Best case scenario: Everyone gets together like Wet Hot American Summer and makes it happen.

Worst case scenario: It goes all Arrested Development Season 4 and barely has the entire cast spend time in the same scene.

Something LOST-like would be great, where they are flashing back to a world-wide Nerf war (shut up it could happen) that split them all apart, and they eventually come together to fix the mistake. Maybe they have to rescue Donald Glover from a prison camp at some point.

I would legit watch this. Nice work!

I saw every NBC episode, and maybe 2 of the Yahoo season, which was a shell of itself. If they make a movie, and it’s on real TV (not a streaming service), I’ll probably watch it. But I won’t be heartbroken if they don’t.
