Back in the 70s, John Carpenter was just trying to get into the movies. He made two फिल्में later on (Which we will be talking about this month, so don’t आप worry about it), but at the time he was working on his first movie, he had a budget of over three hundred thousand dollars. द्वारा Hollywood standards, that’s nothing. But, in the end, because John Carpenter is a genius director, he was able to create one of the best slasher फिल्में of all time, before sequels and remakes ruined it. That’s right, I’m talking about Halloween.
The movie takes place in the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois. Michael Myers, at the age of six, kills his sister and is sent to a psychiatric ward in doing so. Fifteen-years-later, at the age of twenty one, Michael Myers manages to escape while in a car on his way to his imprisonment. After escaping, Michael begins to kill everyone he meets in the town of Haddonfield on हैलोवीन night. The movie was such a classic back in the दिन for how it managed to be one of the first classic slasher फिल्में out there. Before Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm सड़क, स्ट्रीट came along, हैलोवीन was the first of the slasher फिल्में (Or, if आप want to get technical, Psycho was the first slasher movie, and if आप want to continue, there’s those Universal monster फिल्में of the 30s. But shut up, because we’ll be here forever if we talked about that). Anyway, after years of other slasher films coming along, using some of the same old cliches, how does the original हैलोवीन hold up… Well…
Back when हैलोवीन first came out, I could see why people would find this scary. And yes, it does have some scary moments, but nowadays, after so much slasher movies, when आप look at हैलोवीन a little closer, आप start to notice that it too fell victim to some cliches of all the slasher movies. Teens having sex are most likely the ones to die, the killer never says a single word and kills people with a knife, they never seem to just die already and are always able to come back again and again, the cops are horribly incompetent of catching him until the very last minute, if ever at all. आप see what I mean? I can forgive those cliches, since हैलोवीन used them all before they became cliches, but it’s hard to watch today without thinking of cliches from other slasher movies. But does that make हैलोवीन bad? No, far from it.
While the movie may have some cliches, it makes up for it with how it manages to have a great villain, Myers. He’s quiet, yes, but he’s very good. The lack of him speaking makes him और mysterious. He’s hidden underneath that mask, and आप have no idea what he may look like. Also, how he murders people is creative. Instead of using countless gore that we see everywhere today, he just looks at them through a first person perspective, as he kills them. It really shows आप how the act of killing someone is shown through the eyes of the killer themself, and it really is quite terrifying. And then आप have the ending of the movie. Not going to spoil what happens, but boy, it really does manage to make आप fear Michael Myers.
The movie was quite good, and still is good today. Maybe not as fresh as it was back in 1978, but it still manages to hold up as a timeless classic. हैलोवीन may not have been the first slasher movie, but it definitely was the slasher movie to launch slasher फिल्में into the mainstream, which is why we now have all sorts of slasher films everywhere we go. Even today, we’re getting new and unique slasher films. And we’re also getting…. Not unique and just plane terrible ones. But still, हैलोवीन managed to bring an entire genre of horror into the light, and I think that makes this movie better than anyone would think it to be. Take care.
Up अगला on October Movie Marathon: The crappy sequel
