Another George A. Romero movie, and each time, they seem to get worse and worse… for the characters in it, of course. The फिल्में don’t ever seem to get terrible (Unless it’s Diary या Survival of the Dead. Those two sucked). As a प्रशंसक of Romero’s Dead franchise, I can’t ever get enough of those movies. And the movie that we will be talking about today is definitely no exception. It was the last in the chronological order of the Dead series, but was also the first mixed opinion Dead movie, and that movie is Land of the Dead.
Land of the Dead is the fourth Dead movie with the highest budget. And boy, with the sets, makeup, and gore effects, it shows. The movie takes place in an outpost in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The outpost is known for having the rich live in luxury in a high-rise known as Fiddler’s Green, while the poor live out, starving and dying, as the outpost keeps the dead out using two rivers on each side, and the third side being sealed off द्वारा an electric fence. The evil ruler of the city, Paul Kaufman, has funded a deadly machine known as Dead Reckoning, a giant car driven द्वारा Riley Denbo, who does what he can to help the survivors stay alive. With the help of Slack and Charlie, other survivors, Riley must find Dead Reckoning, which has been taken द्वारा Dead Reckoning second-in-command, Cholo DeMora, who rebels against Kaufman and threatens to destroy Fiddler’s Green, using Dead Reckoning. While that’s going on, the zombies around them begin to evolve, becoming smarter, using firearms, and being able to communicate with one another. And that’s quite a lot going on with this movie.
Now, is Land of the Dead the scariest of the Dead movies. No, far from it. It’s pretty gory, but gory isn’t scary. However, I can still get some enjoyment for how insane the movie is. Seeing Dead Reckoning drive down the road, cutting down zombies, is really cool to look at. And it’s nice seeing zombies with बंदूकों for once. आप rarely see zombies use any firearms, and I think this movie managed to use it well. Occasionally, आप get a jump here and there, but it’s never jump away and scream like a little girl scary. I mean, I never find anything scary, but from the standpoint of a person who can get scared, this movie really isn’t much with being scary. But damn if it isn’t the coolest of the Dead फिल्में for how it uses its special effects. Also, the gore effects are brutal as ever in this movie. People getting their faces ripped off, having their mouths torn open, being ripped apart. Yes, the Dead franchise always had that, but with a much bigger budget, the bloodbath is even bloodier. And I’m sure that’s what we all came for in a Dead movie. Don’t lie.
The social commentary in this movie is just as present as any Dead movie. Night had racism, Dawn had consumerism, दिन had violence between men. Even the crappier ones, Diary and Survival, talked about things like technology and protests. So, what’s the commentary on Land of the Dead? Probably shouldn’t be too hard, but the commentary is how the rich are treated compared to the poor. The rich are able to live without worry in the massive Fiddler’s Green, while the poor are forced to fight off frostbite, hunger, and that’s not even going into the zombies. Cinemassacre’s Monster Madness stated that Land of the Dead was like the Edgar Allen Poe story, Masque of the Red Death, and I honestly couldn’t have put it any better. While hundreds and hundreds of people die outside, the rich are walled off, having parties, and ignoring the looming threat that is outside. Is this a और modernized version of the classic Poe story? Somehow, I feel like it is.
Of course, आप all know what I प्यार about this movie. It’s what I प्यार about any horror related thing. The monsters in it. और specifically, the zombies. These are probably some of the most creative zombies I’ve seen in a movie. Sure, they lumber slowly and moan, all that zombie jazz. But, these zombies are different. They’re smart. They learn from mistakes, and manage to gain new information with everything they do. As zombies evolve in this movie, they make their way to the outpost to eat the survivors, and with the rebellion going on within the city walls, no one is noticing until the last minute. And they are all lead द्वारा one zombie called Big Daddy. They are able to walk underwater perfectly to get across the lake, use weapons to break down doors and dismember people, and, like I कहा before, use firearms. They are just so creatively used, and I प्यार every scene they are in.
So, in conclusion, Land of the Dead. Best Romero movie ever? No, not at all. But it’s entertaining enough for me to give a good rating. The movie was successful in a few different ways. Maybe not the best critically, but managed to do well in box office sales. The movie even had Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright, who both worked on Shaun of the Dead, as cameos. Land of the Dead even got a game, titled Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler’s Creek… It was a terrible game. The movie may not be the best of the Dead franchise, but it still holds a special place in my heart. Take care.
