Star Alyssa Sutherland talks to IGN about Queen Aslaug\'s upcoming showdown with Ragnar\'s first wife.
Fans of History\'s Vikings watched in awe last week as Katheryn Winnick\'s Lagertha led a huge raid on her former home, Kattegat, with the intention of overthrowing Queen Aslaug - the women she\'s convinced bewitched Ragnar, stealing him away all those years ago.
What lies in store for us this week on "In the Uncertain Hour Before the Morning" -- airing Wednesday, December 21st? Well, Aslaug herself, Alyssa Sutherland, chatted with me about the episode, providing a preview for the Queen\'s showdown with the mighty Lagertha. Is Aslaug ready to give up all her power or does she have a backup plan in mind?
"I don\'t think Lagertha\'s kept her intentions that well hidden," laughed Sutherland, explaining that Aslaug must have known what was coming. "She basically outright told Aslaug what was going to happen. I don\'t think it was a secret. I think she was aware. Those weren\'t subtle hints being dropped."
"The thing that I love about Aslaug is that she\'s brainy," Sutherland explained, knowing that the Queen wouldn\'t be able to take on Lagertha in a fight. "She uses her head. That\'s how she seduced Ragnar. She solved his riddle and showed him how smart she was. If I had read any script that had Aslaug going off to fight with people or throwing down with Katheryn I think it would have been totally out of character. That\'s not who she is. I like that difference."
Will those brains come into play this week when Aslaug comes face to face with Lagertha? "Yes, you can expect that. Absolutely," Sutherland revealed. "I like how it all goes down. She\'s going to use her brains. She knows that physically this isn\'t going to work out for her so instead she goes another route."

Sutherland also found it amusing that it was mostly the female characters on the show who felt that Aslaug seduced Ragnar with magic. "Even now, in our society, it\'s okay for men to do bad things, but not women," she said. "It\'s much harder to forgive women for misbehaving. I think a lot people also forget that Lagertha left. But the fans have been so invested in these characters that it\'s easy for them to feel so strongly about a character who rips things apart. When you come in and make life harder for one of the beloved characters, I think you kind of have to know that you\'re not going to be liked."
"I feel that people often forget that we\'re dealing with Vikings and a different culture and a different set of morals," Sutherland continued. "Going and sleeping with someone outside of your marriage wasn\'t considered a horrible thing to do. I often refer back to the first episode of the show when Lagertha tells Ragnar \'Don\'t sleep with too many women.\' It\'s a little bit unfair to judge Aslaug for what probably went on all the time. It takes two to tango."
