Most series might be going a little soft around the mid-point of their sixth season but, thankfully for us,
In fact, to hear Melissa McBride tell it, as she did about the new episodes that begin airing Sunday, we’re in for quite a ride.
\'The Walking Dead\': See the ultra-tense first four minutes of Sunday\'s midseason premiere
"This is by far the most intense and psychologically thrilling part of the series that we’ve had,” she tells
Besides members of our team walking through a mass of walkers, we know that Daryl, Abraham and Sasha are face-to-face with some not-so-friendly Negan followers (see the first four minutes of Sunday’s episode, "No Way Out" here).
And what will Carol (McBride) have to deal with in not only Sunday’s episode but beyond as we know Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) is fast approaching? The actress clued us in on as much as she could about what we’ll see.
MASHABLE: What is the bigger threat moving into these episodes, walkers or other humans?
MELISSA MCBRIDE: Well, I think in this episode in particular they’re equal threat. You have the walkers in great numbers, which I look at it and say this is one big singular beast that is huge. And then you also have the human beings that can be either a liability or they can be a threat. They are a great threat because they’re unpredictable. Do you know who you can trust? Do they know how to fight? Are they going to aim right? You just don’t know. Certainly the walkers are hungry but also how hungry are these other people?
That’s one thing about Carol, she knows what she’s capable of. She can project that same thing. She knows what she’s keeping to herself. She knows what she’s done. She knows exactly what she’s capable of doing if she has to. That’s kind of a scary thing and you think there’s other people that could’ve taken the same steps. You just don’t know what people are capable of.
How does she feel about Morgan going into these episodes?
McBride: I think he represents a difficult thing for her to come to terms with. He’s a constant reminder of all the stuff that she’s had to do. Every time he says life is precious ... well, of course it is. \'I think about that all the time [and] that’s why what I’ve had to do is so painful but we have to do it. Please stop telling me that. I know it is.\'
But at the same time, as unfortunate as it is, we have to do what we have to do to survive. Sure, it would be so nice if we could just not have to take anyone’s life, but it’s not that easy.
There’s so much tension between the two characters even before they say a word.
McBride: Yeah, I love that scene with the fork in the road or the intersection. He’s walking one way, she’s walking another way, after that interaction when the wolf attacks and it’s just a look. We’re going our own way.
Moving forward beyond this episode, we know that Negan is coming soon and he’s a big bad. Is that the primary thing we’ll see our team fight against?
McBride: Oh, there’s definitely other things unfolding. There are many, many things unfolding ... there’s changes ahead for all of these characters just because we keep living and dealing with life and what this world gives to us.
