The First Trailer for 'Walking Dead' Season 6 and Highlights from Comic-Con
Norman Reedus loved his Comic-Con doppelganger, and Andrew Lincoln's mom is 'shipping Rick and Michonne!
Zombies took over Comic-Con\'s Hall H on Friday with the day\'s first big panel. Stars Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Dunai Gurira, Michael Cudlitz and Melissa McBride were joined by showrunner Scott M. Gimple and producer/effects artist Greg Nicotero and host Chris Hardwick to talk about the show, and bring us the first trailer for Season 6. Here are the highlights.
1. Season 6 Looks More Intense Than Ever
Chris Hardwick kicked off the panel by screening the first trailer for Season 6, and it looked more intense than ever. It starts out with Rick and his ragged band showing up in Alexandria, a sheltered community that\'s successfully walled itself off from the zombie-infested outside world. A clash in leadership is inevitable as Rick and an old friend played by Lennie James don\'t see eye-to-eye about how to protect themselves from the constant threat of being eaten alive. Look for Ethan Embry making his first appearance as well as some full-on skeleton zombies in this trailer. They look like a very cool new direction for the Walkers.
With Lennie James returning to the series after his very brief Episode 1 appearance, Chris Hardwick wanted to know what his character, Morgan, had been doing ever since then.
"We may find out this season," he said. "But one of the things he\'s been doing has been trying to find Rick, and he does and kind of wishes he hadn\'t. But yeah I think we\'re going to find out more about what he\'s been doing this whole time."
At 16, Chandler Riggs has been on the show for a big chunk of his own life. He opened up about what it was like working with the same cast and crew for so long, and also what he thinks about Carl\'s perception of Alexandria.
"I think Carl sees Alexandria as a reset button, and a chance to live life the way life should be lived," he said. He went on: "He went into shock when he [saw them playing video games]. It was like years ago before the Apocalypse started. But he sees their vulnerability, so even though Alexandria is a safe place, they have to protect themselves."
In season 6 we\'ll see Carl chafe more and more at Alexandria\'s rule against wandering outside the wall, but he finds a confidant in Enid. "Carl sees Enid as another survivor," Riggs said. "She\'s the one person in that place that get\'s what it\'s like outside the walls. That\'s why he likes to go outside the walls and hang out with her. But it\'s not safe to be out there."
4. Carol Is Going Deep Undercover with Those Cookies
Melissa McBride embraced Carol\'s chameleon-like Alexandria transformation, bringing a plate of what appeared to be fresh-baked cookies to the panel. She was asked about Carol\'s main fears about this new community experience.
"She had really important work to do finding out who these people are, what they\'re capable of, what they\'re not capable of, so the biggest fear for her is just having her cover blown," McBride said.
She also admitted Tyreese\'s death is weighing heavily on Carol.
"Every death is heart-breaking," she said."It just fuels the fire even more to fight harder, and keep everyone safe. Everything is fueled by the loss of people. She can\'t stand around and watch people die. She\'s ready to pay the price, go to Hell, whatever, to help the people she cares about."
As Abraham, Michael Cudlitz quickly became a fan favorite. He teased those fans Friday, promising them his "biggest defining moment is yet to come." Producer Greg Nicotero noted that "Whenever you get the script, Abraham always has the best lines." So we can look forward to more of that.
As expected, Norman Reedus got the biggest applause in Hall H when the
cast was introduced. He proved in his answers that he\'s just as awesome as you want to believe. When asked how he prepares for a day of shooting he didn\'t disappoint.
"A lot of Motorhead, a lot of coffee, I play a lot of Candy Crush lately, so there\'s that," he said. "I\'m so into it. I\'ve spent hundreds of dollars on it. You guys send me lives on that, I\'ll play forever."
When one fan stood up wearing an impeccable Daryl costume to ask a question, Reedus was impressed. Before answering the question, he took a moment to appreciate the costume, clicking pictures of it on his phone and quipping, "The minute you stood up, I knew I liked you."
When asked about Rick\'s relationship with Michonne, Lincoln admitted his mom loves their chemistry. "My mum is despearate to get Rick and Michonne together. \'If you have any political clout, get those two together!\' She gets very worked up about it."
At this point in the show, he also said Michonne is one of the only people Rick trusts with his life and with his children\'s lives, and as such, he genuinely listens to what she has to say. And that respect is a two-way street.
