Neither actually. I don't think they were pointless, at least at the beginning. But deffo i cannot describe them with the other 4!

I would say they are a normal couple.

I love them in the first season and some of season 2, but once her and Damon start having more of a connection I didn't care as much for Stefan and Elena. Their relationship was really forced once Damon really came into the picture for her. Stefan is supposed to be with Katherine if you go by the universe makes them end up together. Elena is meant to be with Tom if that is the way the show is trying to make it work. She was never meant to be with Stefan. He wasn't supposed to live long enough to even meet her. So she is actually meant to be with Damon. They work the best together. They have the best chemistry and they are happier people when they are together.
