If you\'ve read Rick Yancey\'s apocalyptic dystopian novel The 5th Wave, you\'ll no doubt be bloody buzzing that the movie adaptation\'s *finally* out in cinemas. If you haven\'t read it you have two options: a) read it, then go watch it come to life on the big screen or b) just see the movie, damnit. It\'s awesome.
ANYWAY, around this time last year aka ages ago we actually got invited over to Atlanta to hang out with Chloë Grace Moretz, Nick Robinson, actual author Rick Yancey and co. on the movie set. Y\'know, as you do. No big deal. So we hopped on a plane with nothing but dreams, a cardigan and shitloads of snacks to see what the hell was goin\' down.
Then we were pretty much sworn to secrecy as to what *was* goin\' down on set; so be proud we managed not to spill too much \'till now, eh?
Now since no photography or anything was actually allowed on set for obvious reasons, we thought we\'d do our best to LET YOU IN on the whole behind-the-scenes experience via the medium of the written word. Basically this involves us presenting you with a list of errrythang we learnt chillin\' with the cast and crew over in Atlanta. Ready?
Like, seriously. When you watch a 90-odd-minute movie, you sort of never realise just how much work goes into making it. The crew had been on set since ridiculous o\'clock, the cast were filming one of the movie\'s most pivotal scenes and the day was long af. Did anybody complain? Nah, they were loving it.
If y\'all have seen the Kick Ass movies you\'ll know that already. But yeah, we can\'t think of any actress on the scene rn better suited to play protagonist Cassie Sullivan. Also as we hung around with her on set essentially all day (kinda surreal tbh) we loved how down-to-Earth, professional and downright cool that girl is.
We visited the set before Jurassic World had even been released and everyone decided they were in love with his character Zach Mitchell, so we\'re sort of claiming ownership of him alright? \'Ownership\' probably isn\'t the word, but what we\'re tryna say is Nick is SO FIT as Ben Parish, was wearing camo gear the entire day and didn\'t even seen to realise just how hot he actually is.
It\'s also worth pointing out he\'s just as down-to-Earth, profesh and brilliant as Chloe. AND BE OUR BOYFRIEND NOW THANKS.
Not gonna lie, we always kinda assumed the authors of the novels never had much input in the movie adaptations, but that ain\'t the case here. Rick admitted he\'d pretty much left everything in the very capable hands of director J Blakeson, but he was still buzzin\' about on set seeing how his idea was brought to life. Cute.
The cast and crew were obviously super busy throughout the day which didn\'t leave much time to pick up food. The solution? Potentially the best buffet station right next to set complete with hot and cold food, a SHIT TONNE of Hershey\'s chocolate (the jury\'s still out but we love it) and actual bowls of sweets. Even Chloë was constantly over there diving into the doughnuts, which just made us love her even more. Have we reached our Mecca?
Oh no, wait. NOW we\'ve reached our Mecca. Because we apparently hadn\'t taken full advantage of the buffet table (lol jk), we were taken through to the canteen to experience the catering Chloë
, Nick and that lot were used to every day on set. To say it was incredible was an understatement.
Basically there aren\'t enough positive adjectives in the English language to describe it, but the fact we were sat eating as many fajitas as we wanted with Nick Robinson sat but centimetres away probably gives you some indication of our thoughts on the matter.
Fair play, The 5th Wave looks sick af in the cinema. The effects, the post-production, all that malarky. In reality, we were stood around in a FREEZING cold warehouse watching \'em all get down to business.
Yeah, the red carpet premieres and finished flicks always look super slick; but behind-the-scenes these guys are working in conditions us regular muggles are used to. WHO KNEW?
Sort of a side note, but we love a bit of Atlanta. Didn\'t know much about it before tbh, now big fans. Also it\'s always good to Instagram from America innit? Gets the likes in.
Director chappy J Blakeson made a point of explaining that, while he wanted to stay as true to the original tale as possible, he\'d be putting his own spin on it. What struck us, though, was the attention paid to the detail of the book.
Sam Sullivan\'s teddy? He went through tests to determine how PLUMP AND FLUFFY HE WAS. Actual, proper tests. That\'s the detail we\'re talking here. Crazy stuff.
What d\'ya make of that, then? Desperate to see The 5th Wave? Give us a tweet over @sugarscape or drop a comment in the box below please, danke and thank ya.
