First he followed Voldemort, then he followed Dumbledore. Regardless of his motivations, he was still loyal to Dumbledore and followed his orders even when he was reluctant or had doubts. He needed and trusted Dumbledore's guidance.

I think he was a born leader. He became a Potions' Master, he was Head of Slytherin. But, I think he chose his two masters because he doubted his own judgement at that time. His faith was shaken.

He fallowed lily until the end, and voldemort and dumbledore. But i think he had no choice, he was somehow damaged inside. Despite this i think, that under other circumstances he could have been a leader.
