Prince Charles was so wracked with doubt about his relationship with Princess Diana that he was close to abandoning her at the altar, a new book has claimed.

A biography of the Prince of Wales by Catherine Mayer entitled Charles: Heart Of A King claims to shed light on the mind of the man in the run-up to the royal wedding.

And in the book, it is claimed that the Prince of Wales told a close confidant that he ‘was desperate’ and that Princess Diana was ‘not the jolly country girl he had assumed.’

Prince Charles even told a member of his inner circle that he ‘couldn’t go through with it,’ the Telegraph reports.

Princess Diana famously had her own doubts about marrying into the Royal Family. She told her biographer Andrew Morton that she went to see her sister before the wedding, saying: ‘I can’t marry him, this is absolutely unbelievable.’

The book’s author, Catherine Mayer, has been accused by Clarence House of overstating the access she had to Prince Charles. An aide said she had only a nine-minute conversation, the Mirror reports.

Mayer told the BBC yesterday: ‘I had some help from Clarence House to not only attend events that Press could accredit for, but also to talk to members of his inner circle and his friends.’
