I have watched three of these (with the 1980 version sitting on top of my DVD player ready for viewing) and the '95 version is still my favorite!! The 1940 version was so bad it was hilarious (and I mean bad in that the characters weren't anything like those in the book and the storyline barely paralleled with the novel). But it was so funny!!

I've watched the 95,05 and 1940 versions. 1940, '05 versions were way off with the actual storyline and acting (sorry Olivier there's jus only one Darcy). Though the 1940 was great fun because well it didn't take itself too seriously and you could tell. It didn't want to be just an adaptation but more of a paradoy and for that reason it was great. Whereas, the 05 was awful well cz it did so hard to outdo the 95 one it lost its Austeness, if you get what I mean. It jus became a dumbed down chik flick sadly.

The 95 version is definitely my favourite! I love how the characters are actually so similar to those in the book.
The 2005 version is pretty good too, but not as close to the original characters. Still good though! =D

The one thing that really bothered the most (among other things) about the 1940 version was Lady Catherine de Bourgh at the end. That was so completely not what I was expecting that I was dumbfounded!!

well, 2005 version was the first I've seen so I felt in love with it! 1995 was awesome of course, but it was too close to the original if you know what I mean=)

I watched 2005 version first too. But it doesn't mean its the best for me.
Well, I know Bride and Prejudice. But I doesn't like it I think. I doesn't remember the movie just the actress, she played in Last Legion I think.
1995 version is the real Pride And Prejudice. Only scene can be better than in 2005 is the dance, Darcy and Elizabeth, but even there, I think 1995 better.

This is the best one yet! I think that the actors were soooooo close to the charaters in the book! When I watched the movie, i read the book and I saw the movie playing in my head! Mr. Darcy is perfect!! Colin Firth is awesome!!

I've seen all of these, except the 2003 version. My favorite is the 2005 version - it truly brought out the passion, glamour and chemistry of the novel in my opinion, even if it wasn't the most faithful version. A fantastic soundtrack, fantastic cinematography, fantastic actors (with fantastic chemistry) all combine to create one amazing version.

It wasn't trying to outdo the '95 version at all... those who worked on it were trying to create an entirely different version, as opposed to those that just try to be the book on screen. Anyone can mimic what is already done - creativity in bringing a novel to screen is not a sin.

And there is nothing wrong with bringing Jane Austen to the public. Yes, it is more widespread, but that does not make it "dumbed down". And I personally believe that making a great story widely available is GOOD. I have a friend who decided to see the 2005 version. She very much liked it, so she read the book and then watched the miniseries and is now very much a JA fan. If the only decent version available is five hours long - how do you spread the love? Most people will not sit through five hours of somehting they are not sure they will absolutely adore.

Sorry for ranting, but there never seems to be enough love for the 05 version. I really do like the 95 miniseries - not going to lie, especially Colin Firth - but it has its flaws. The costuming of the Bennets does not at all accurately reflect their means. And to me Jennifer Ehle was quite stiff compared to Keira Knightley. She was much less believable as an outdoorsy, spirited, rebellious woman. Plus I felt like much of the chemistry in the miniseries comes from Colin Firth. The most compassion that I saw in Jennifer Ehle was when she sees the Pemberley. I know she was trying to be gradual, but I have a much harder time believing her a woman in love than I do Keira.

By the way, I do *ADORE* both versions. And I think everyone should be able to like both or have their opinion without people saying that their favorite version is "not what true Austenites should like", etc. etc. :)

I reallly hate the 2005 version, I hate keira aswell though, but the american version is really not following the book at all( no offence people) and they live in this really dusty old farmers house and they're supposed to be quite rich. and that really annoyes me. and when they're dancing, they're supposed to be in a beautiful house but it looks like they're in a barn or something, and I like colin way better than the other mr. darcy.

I've seen part of Bride and Prejudice, and it was very good, but the 1995 version is the only one for me. There is just so much emotion and tension going on under the surface that you really have to watch it carefully to get it. I agree with Kateliness2 on some points, but not all, especially that part about Jennifer. She was AMAZING as Elizabeth, but then, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and i think it's great that Kateliness2 feels so comfortable sharing hers.

I can honestly say this is the only P&P adaptation that I like. I generally like various Austen adaptations, but this is the only Pride and Prejudice, in my opinion. I'm re-watching the 2005 version at this very minute, and it is just...meh. So muddled. And, of course, no one can beat Colin Firth.
