The people of Nunavut have a rich culture and heritage which has been preserved to a great extent despite all the influences of modern media such as North American media.
Art and Crafts:
Prints, stone carvings, and weavings are some of the traditional art and crafts that are practiced द्वारा the Inuit. At the core of their culture lies hunting, fishing, and trapping since these were the three main occupations of the Inuit, essential for their survival in the freezing Arctic region.
Canadian artist and लेखक James Archibald Houston was mainly responsible for the promotion and sale of traditional Inuit art with the assistance of the Hudson’s खाड़ी, बे Company after World War II. The production of traditional Inuit art has been encouraged and publicized in the modern era and they are the forms of income for several communities currently residing in Nunavut.
Sports and Recreation:
Hockey and Curling are very लोकप्रिय sports in Nunavut along with स्नोमोबाइल, snowmobile and dogsled racing among other traditional arctic sports. Since they were essential for their survival at one point, hunting, fishing, hiking and kayaking have turned into लोकप्रिय outdoor activities as well.
As it follows, large-scale hunting is never too good for the animal population. Therefore, several areas in Nunavut have been set aside as protected National Parks and Sanctuaries. These include the Auyuittuq National Park on Baffin Island and Ukkusiksalik National Park on the mainland among many others.
Music and Performing Arts:
Inuit throat गाना and drum-led dancing are considered to be the indigenous संगीत of Nunavut. One can also find some country music, bluegrass, square dancing, the button accordion and the fiddle, an infusion of European influence.
One of the most notable singer and songwriter is Susan Aglukark who uses a combination of the Inuktitut and English languages in her contemporary pop music. She has won several awards and is considered a very influential figure for promoting a great understanding and appreciation of the Inuit culture through her work.
Coming to performing arts, a major Inuit performing group is Artcirq. They are extremely talented circus performers who have performed all over the world and most notably in the 2010 Olympic Winter games in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Film and Media:
The Igloolik-based film production company Isuma was set up in 1990. In 1999, it produced Atanarjuat, the first feature film written, directed and acted entirely in Inuktitut. In November 2006, the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation introduced the Nunavut एनीमेशन Lab which gave एनीमेशन training to artists at workshops in Iqaluit, Cape Dorset, and Pangnirtung.
In terms of media houses, the Inuit Broadcasting Corporation is based in Nunavut. The region also publishes two regional weekly newspapers.
