A Breakdown of All the Valyrian Steel Weapons on 'Game of Thrones'
The myths of 'Game of Thrones' are almost better than the show itself.
and other book series that have captured the hearts of sci-fi/fantasy fans over the years,
is forged in mythos. The ambition of authors like George R.R. Martin transcends mere storytelling. His novels seek to tell stories within stories, and every one has a history all its own.
so enthralling, both in book and television form. The night is dark and full of terrors, but also secrets and stories that have been passed down from generation to generation. The
isn\'t one source, but many, which is why we learn much of the history of the Seven Kingdoms through readings (RIP Shireen), stories, and even weapons.
is Valyrian Steel. This metal, forged in dragonfire during the days of the great Valyrian Freehold, is more than 5000 years old. As fans of the books and the series know, The metal is extremely rare (only a few hundred weapons are supposed to exist). It\'s exceptionally light, sharp, and distinctive thanks to its rippled appearance. Many of the swords and daggers remaining are kept as heirlooms by the great families. All of these weapons have a history and, if we\'re guessing, a future that we\'ll see play out over the course of the final two seasons.
In Martin\'s novels, there are many Valyrian steel weapons mentioned, but we\'ve only seen a handful on the show so far. Here\'s a breakdown of the ones we know:
First seen in the premiere episode, Ice is the massive Valyrian blade used by Ned Stark for ceremony (executions) and war. Kept in a wolf pelt scabbard, the sword was in Winterfell for over four centuries.
Kept by the Mormonts for 500 years, Jeor handed it down to Jorah but the future right hand of Daenerys Targaryen left it with his father before leaving Westeros. Jeor then gave the sword to Jon Snow as thanks for saving his life. Mormont also replaced the hilt with a white direwolf for Snow. Longclaw is the only weapon, besides dragonglass, known to have killed a white walker.
First glimpsed this season when Sam and Gilly arrive at Horn Hill, Randyll Tarly says the sword has been in the family for 500 years. It\'s now in the possession of Sam, who stole it before leaving his family for Oldtown and the Citadel.
After the execution of Ned Stark, Tywin Lannister took Ice and had it melted down into two smaller blades. One, Oathkeeper, was given to Jaime Lannister by his father. But Jaime passed the sword on, giving it to Brienne of Tarth as a gift. She named it and currently has it.
The other sword forged from Ice, Widow\'s Wail was given to Joffrey Baratheon before his death. It hasn\'t been seen since but is likely in the possession of King Tommen or Cersei Lannister.
Used during the assassination attempt on Bran Stark in season one, this knife is the only Valyrian steel weapon we\'ve seen on the show that isn\'t a sword. It was once owned by Petyr Baelish but he says he gave it to Tyrion Lannister, likely a lie. It was used by a Lannister assassin but its origin and current whereabouts are unknown.
And, for good measure, here are the other Valyrian weapons mentioned in the books that we may see in the series eventually. Hopefully, I didn\'t miss any...
Blackfyre - Sword of House Targaryen. Wielded by Aegon the Conqueror and lost during the Blackfyre Rebellion.
Dark Sister - Sword of Visenya Targaryen, last owned by the Three-Eyed Raven.
Brightroar - Sword of House Lannister, lost by King Tommen II on his expedition to Valyria.
Red Rain - Sword of House Drumm of Old Wyk in the Iron Islands. It was supposedly stolen from the Reynes.
Nightfall - Sword of House Harlaw of Ten Towers in the Iron Islands.
Valyrian arakh - The weapon of Caggo Corpsekiller of the Windblown.
Valyrian axe - rumored to be part of the treasure horde of House Celtigar of Claw Isle.
