‘Fear The Walking Dead’ Recap: Travis Comes…

Humanity is at a complete and total loss on ‘Fear The Walking Dead.’ Will Madison and Travis find their way back to each other before it’s too late?

, Travis (Cliff Curtis) is still trapped in downtown Los Angeles with his ex-wife and son. As he desperately tries to get back to Madison (Kim Dickens) and her kids, the entire family has a too-close-for-comfort encounter with not one, but two infected walkers. Plus, Alicia (Alycia Debnam-Carey) finally finds out what’s really going on.

picked up right where the second one left off: with a total mob scene tearing Los Angeles apart. Chris is peering through the gated window to watch the scene unfold, but that’s when he unintentionally makes eye contact with a walker. It’s a strange sight because not only are the walker’s eyes hollow and dead, but he still seems alert. As if he knows he’s looking directly into Chris’ eyes. So creepy.

Unfortunately the riot takes over the store next to the barber shop where Travis and the second family are hold up, and it doesn’t take long for a fire to erupt. Once it starts to burn through the walls they have no choice left but to run, and the second they open the door a mob of people rushes in to start destroying things. Everyone makes it outside, but they are only feet into the chaos before Chris witnesses one police officer chowing down on another.

They make a run for it and it seems like they might actually make it when suddenly a large piece of scaffolding crashes down onto the barber’s wife. They manage to pull her out, but her foot is broken and bloody and she can’t walk. Her husband carries her into the back of Travis’ truck and they get out of the city, but how long will she last without treatment… or antibiotics?

When Travis tries to stop at a hospital they find that it is a madhouse outside. The police have the driveways barricaded off, and there is an ambulance that crashed and was abandoned with the sirens still going. As Travis slowly drives by the parking lot the police start to fire at the walkers coming out of the hospital building, and everyone in the truck has to duck and cover. Thankfully they make it past the insanity unharmed, but now they realize they have nowhere else to go. Travis and the barber decide that they will all go back to his house where Madison and her kids are waiting. But, as they drive through the hills over Los Angeles all of the lights slowly go out across the city. It’s terrifying to watch and leaves them all speechless.

Back at the house, Madison has the kids locked inside the house and has managed to keep Nick’s withdrawals at bay with the painkillers she stole from the high school. To keep them entertained she whips out Monopoly, and they are more than eager to play a game with her if only so that they can forget about what’s going on outside. Especially after watching one of their neighbors tear through another on a front lawn just across the street. Awkward.

Nick starts to question whether or not Travis is even going to come back, but Madison refuses to hear it. Before the two of them can get into it too much there’s a noise outside that startles Alicia. When they all go to look out the window and see what’s happening they don’t see anything, and Nick decides to close the windows so they don’t draw any attention to themselves. Nick thinks it’s time they tell Alicia what is really going on, but Madison is not interested because she thinks it will blow over before she has to. Thankfully, she hasn’t actually witnessed what they have just yet, so she’s still not sure what’s happening.

Then another noise startles them. It sounds like someone is trying to get their back door open, and for whatever reason Nick decides to rip open the curtain to see what it is. With my heart in my throat I’m thrilled to find out that it’s just a dog, and Nick is quick to let the poor thing in. He’s covered in blood, but Nick says it’s not his.

Nick reminds Madison that their neighbor has a gun, and he knows this because he apparently tried to steal it once. The three of them leave the dog in the house as it continues barking at the front door where their walker neighbor has made a direct beeline for. Unfortunately, they forgot to close the back door when they leave.

Even though they make it safely into their neighbors house, something feels off. Where could their neighbor be? There is no sign of life… or a struggle. Did they just not make it home? Madison continues to call for the neighbor but eventually gives up once Nick finally finds the gun in question. In the dining room they find the shells, and that’s where Alicia witnesses someone go in their back door. The three of them watch in horror as the dog they let in tries to fight off the walker, then eventually wails before going silent. Alicia still has no idea what is happening.

Just then they see headlights, and it’s Travis’ truck pulling into the driveway. Talk about terrible timing.

Travis goes inside the house to find Madison and the kids, but he’s not alone: his ex-wife and son have followed him inside against his wishes. It’s not long before he stumbles upon their neighbor eating the now dead dog on the living room floor. When the lights flicker on — again, terrible timing — the walker catches sight of Travis and immediately stands up for his next meal. Travis desperately tries to fight off the neighbor but fails, and eventually Madison comes running in the back door with the gun in hand. Travis tells her to put it down, but the barber rips it from her hands and shoots the walker square in the face. Except, it’s not enough. He only shot off half of his face, so he takes a step closer to the walker, presses the gun against his bloody face, and fires. Blood and brains splatter against the curtains and he eventually falls to the ground as everyone in the room gawks in horror.

I’m not going to lie: even I had to pause after that moment to catch my breath. That. Was. Rough.

While this was happening Alicia took it upon herself to go back to their neighbors house to get the shells she left in the dining room. She went alone. As she’s picking up the shells and putting them back in the box she hears something, and that’s when she notices an empty bottle of pills on the dining room table. As she begins to sit up she sees a pair of slippered feet coming down the hallway, and that’s when she makes a run for it.

Unfortunately, Alicia isn’t fast enough, and she gets lost in the maze of her neighbor’s backyard. The elderly lady who lived there takes hold of her hair through a fence and tries to bite her, but she escapes. Right as she’s about to make it over the fence the woman grabs her leg and she gets stuck, but thankfully Chris is there to help her. For some reason she refuses his help and when she finally falls over she clocks him in the face for trying. She is totally freaked out so it’s understandable, but Chris doesn’t get it. Neither one of them know what’s happening, so it’s hard for them to understand.

Nick decides this is the time to tell Alicia that their neighbor, Susan, is dead. She’s not sick like Madison and Travis suggest, she’s dead. It’s a way overdue truth bomb, and Alicia takes it as poorly as expected. Her first concern? Her boyfriend, Matt, who she refuses to accept could be dead. Could be trying to eat people just like their neighbor.

The Family Is Staying Just One More Night… Or So They Say

When things finally settle down and everyone is back inside, Travis tells Madison they have to wait it out overnight. She tells him that they have to leave because they are packed and ready to go, and Alicia agrees because she’s terrified. But Travis knows what it’s really like out there, and with the power still going in and out there’s no way to tell what’s safe and what isn’t. He promises they will leave first thing in the morning to go to the desert. In return, Madison tells him to he has to clean up their dead neighbor and dog in the living room. Fair trade, no?

The next morning the family packs up the truck and car as planned. Madison tells Travis she has one more thing to do before they leave, and a moment later he finds her standing in the backyard with a hammer in her hand staring at their dead neighbor Susan. As she stares, Susan continues to reach through the fence to try and grab her. Travis is too kind and too good hearted for the world of walkers though, because while Madison wants to mercy kill Susan before she hurts anyone else, he reminds her that they don’t know if she can be saved or not. He tells Madison it’s not her call to make, and even though he’s right, they will soon find out that leaving her “alive” was a bad choice.

Travis takes his truck with his ex-wife and son, Chris, as passengers, and Madison packs up her kids in her own car. They leave the Salazar’s behind in their home just like the family requested, and finally take off for the desert. It feels too good to be true, and that’s because it is.

Just as they are pulling off of their block they notice that Susan’s husband, Patrick, has parked outside of the house. Madison freaks out and turns around to stop him before he comes in contact with his now dead wife, and Travis immediately follows after her. Unfortunately Madison catches up to Patrick too late, and he’s just about to wrap his arms around Susan, who is definitely planning on eating him, a gunshot fires. Suddenly Susan’s lifeless body is falling to the floor and the military is swarming the backyard.

Moments later we watch as one of the armed forces interviews both Madison and Travis outside of their home. They are taking names and ages, and when the camera pans out we can see the army clearing out houses. They also have a truck of dead bodies they are loading up, so they have definitely cleared out a large portion of the neighborhood by now. “The calvary’s arrived. It’s gonna get better now,” Travis tells Madison, but there’s just no way that that’s true. After all, we wouldn’t have
