harold As someone who's created many spots, I can say that the one-fan state is pretty typical, particularly when the spot creator doesn't add a lot of initial content. In general, there's two ways to advertise your spot to other fans of the same topic: 1) Make the spot so that it will appear on search engines. To do this, you have to add soapbox articles, links and videos that are all three graced with adequate keywords. If you don't put the spot name in as one of your keywords, it's not going to show up in the search results of other fans' searches nearly as well or as often. Most of the fans of a given topic are going to not already be Fanpop users (just statistically speaking), so making sure you have plenty of adequately keyworded content is key to bringing them in to the spot. 2) Make the spot so it will appear on Fanpop's top page, in case other fans of the topic ARE already on the site. This is a much lesser consideration, but still a valid one. In addition, having content appear on Fanpop's top page creates the possibility of creating new fans of the topic. Of course, it's much more likely that you will grab random users who don't have any particular interest in the topic but who want to add a bunch of random content to your spot...and that's OK, too. It seems to me that the most effective ways to get the spot to appear on the top page are posting images, creating picks and posting to the spot's forum (in that order). Doing all three of these things consistently will eventually grab other Fanpop users' attention. I note that all three of the spots you have specifically called out - including my tribute spot for Ms. Curfman - have not really done these things (aside from images). (Note: I made some edits in the above text to fix typographical errors.)

DarkSarcasm Okay, maybe someone can explain this to me - why the frick is there almost an entire page with 0 fans? Does someone just create a spot and un-fan it, or what? What would the point of that be? O.o BTW, great article, Cinders. =P

em_em Inspired by this I went to have a look at some of these one fan spots and seriously there are loads. Some I can see why, they seem sorta obscure but others I'd really of expected there to be me fans out there on fanpop!

inespinto She rated almost 50,000 things! (at least yesterday, today is probably more) I created a few spots that have 1-10 fans and I'm still very proud of them!

waterlilybarb This is to DarkSarcasm. I'll admit to creating one spot that I "un-fanned", due to the fact that there wasn't much of anything I could add. It used to be that if something had no interest it would be removed after an adequate amount of time. I guess there's just too much here now to do that. I'm much more careful about what I add now, though there now are so many fanpoppers, much of what I plan to add is already here...not that that's a bad thing. BTW, great article Cinders! :-)

aholic I have also been lucky in one of "my" spots. I only got 12 fans in it, but the people there are quick to rate, although not when it comes to the pictures :P

WorshipDwight Thanks for standing up and appreciating the work spot creators put into the spots! I've created three spots myself, squirrels, yo gabba gabba, and viola (instrument), all of which have about 6-8 fans- so I appreciate recognition!!
