Animation mistakes don't really bother me that much, unless they are so obvious that you wonder how they could have happened in the first place.
I was wondering how the Emperor could have so clear understanding about Mulan's crimes, Chi Fu for sure told everything as biased point of view as possible. Well Emperor was REALLY wise man to find out the real situation.
Shang probably found Mulan's house because Fa Zhou seemed to be so famous, he could just have asked for the direction to Fa's house.
This is what I dislike about movie( just my subjective opinion):
1. Mulan didn't get surroundings she deserved:
a) I find Shang's behaviour towards Mulan during the parade disguting and unforgivable( I don't buy "She lied to him" argument, telling untruth isn't always a bad thing to do and Mulan did nothing wrong). I think he doesn't deserve Mulan. For all my dislike of Gang of Three, I think any of them deserves Mulan's love more than Shang does because they didn't care about her being a woman in disguise at all.
b) Despite my previous point, I dislike the Gang of Three too. Ling and Yao for being unlikeable bullies who doesn't deserve to be a Mulan's close friends( IMO again) and who too easily forgiven by her and Chien-Po for being somewhat fatphobiac characte ( I think he is somewhat offensive to plus-size people) because his love of food is really an obsession, he is an embodiment of fatphobiac stereotypes( plus-size=primitive and shallow).
c) The Emperor is supposed to be an embodiment of justice and wisdom. But how that terrible, mysogynist law still exists in China, laws is something the ruler is responsible for. I wouldn't have such problem with it if the Emperor were supposed to be a misguided yet honorable and well-meaning,somewhat greysih character like Powhatan( who did less mistakes IMO) but he is supposed to be perfect. The scene when Mulan hugs him is disgusting to me.
- the songs just sort of drop off?? the first half is jammed with songs and then...nothing. and the songs that are there are nothing special, especially for a renaissance movie. reflection is massively overrated imo.
- probably more of a problem with her fanbase, and the way this movie has been marketed, but everyone loooves to point to how this movie is supposed to break new ground for women - and in places it does - though the resolution to the story seems to be that she just returns home to (presumably) take on the same rigid gender roles she felt unsuited for in the first place. all the genderbending stuff from the army is temporary; chinese society at that time still expected certain behavior from women, and i can't imagine her being exempt from that. and for all the girl-power talk, they still felt like they couldn't let the movie end without shoving her into a romance with shang.
- which, btw, what @adelita said about shang. i get his anger about being lied to, but what other choice did she have? be upfront right away so that he could kill her earlier? (because i think he would have; when he does find out later, what holds him back back from doing it is that she saved his life.). he definitely overreacted.
