Both have good reasons but for Melody her reasons were actually better than Ariel's

I don't really see what was so great about Meldoy's reasons. I mean, she was just being whiny about where she lived. Ariel actually found love, and IMO that's a pretty good reason.

Because she wanted to find out why the necklace had her name on it because she knew it had to be the same reason she wasn't allowed in the sea. She wanted to find out who she was. Ariel's life was kinda bad but Melody's life was even worse. She didn't have any friends Scuttle and Sebasian were more of her gardians than her friends. She was never allowed in the sea unless she sneaked out. She didn't know about part of her life so I think she had much better reasons. I kinda feel like I'm dumping on Ariel my favorite disney princess.

How is Ariel or Melody's life bad? They are princesses!!! PRINCESSES! They have food, shelter, servants, they can do whatever they want. And they get to see Eric quite often.
Ariel's reason to run away from home was really stupid. Just because she had a fight with her dad does not mean she had to make dumb deals with the sea witch... Can you imagine if all teenagers solved their teenage problems the same way and ran away from home when they had a fight with a parent... (double facepalm). And ok, Triton was a bit too harsh, but Ariel for once did not listen to what her father had to say, the whole time she was absolutely selfish and inconsiderate. So yeah, her reasons were quite stupid...
Melody on the other hand... well, just because some people were laughing at her, she decided to repeat her mother's mistake and... make a deal with a sea witch. How clever! She still went to swim in the sea, so I see no reason for her to run away. She just acted like a spoiled, little brat. And her having no friends... well maybe she too incapable to make other friends... I mean were the spoiled kids in the palace the only kids in the whole kingdom...

So many things to say about what you just said

For Ariel she had no mother or mother figure who I think was the only one who understood her. Her sisters especially Attina didn't understand her at all. Ariel not listening to Triton oh please he never listened to her. You know the whole good fish bad fish thing well to her that's the same as humans there are good ones and there are bad ones. Her only friend all those years was Flounder. She wanted to be human for a long time because she see's the human world the same way we do the sea. She wants to know more about that world and live in it because she thinks she'll fit it there. Her people probably thought she was a freak because she loves the human world. Her father scared her to death it's called running away from a violent parent. She had every good reason to run away from home with a father like that. In fact for me he was scarier than Ursula. She didn't run away just because she was mad it was because she loved the human world. She was also in love and the fact that she was willing to give up her home and her voice which was what she was known through out the sea for, for love was amazing. She was brave not stupid. So I don't think her reasons were stupid at all in fact actually brave. Also when I went to take my test to get my learners permit I thought of Ariel's determination and bravery and I got it.

As for Melody never had a any friends because she's a little different. Back than if someone's a little different they're made fun off and are rediculed. She didn't know Morgana was a seawitch since she didn't have a sign on the cave that says "THE SEAWITCH". She ran away because she wanted to know who she truely was and her parents wouldn't tell her. Wouldn't you run away to find out who you truely were and when you didn't know? The spoiled kids where they only ones she was allowed to be with since she never left the castle and the fact that she's a princess. I would rather be friendless than be friends with rude, spoiled, judemental brats. She had no friends and her parents didn't understand her or listen to how she was feeling. She had perfectly good reason to run away from home.

Also just because they're princesses doesn't mean they're perfectly happy money doesn't by happiness

@BelleAnastasia: True, both were impulsive, but I would have to say (in my opinion) that Melody's is worse. I mean, she could've waited when she was older for her parents to explain, and they would've. Triton, however, had NO room for tolerance when Ariel did run away.

Ariel:
Dreamed about being human even before she saw Eric
Eric pretty much sealed it for her going to the human world
King Triton destroyed her ENTIRE collection
Was aware of the consequences

Melody:
Runs away ignorant of the consequences
Is automatically sure the necklace was hers
Goes to creepy sea lady to become a mermaid


......This is easy for me.
And yes KataraLover, I love Melody, but it doesn't mean I think she has better reasons.

Tell me, what would your reaction be, if you ask your daughter to perform in a concert, and you wait for her performance with great excitement, but she never shows up, instead she goes somewhere she's not meant to go? Won't you feel offended? I would. Ariel was acting selfish, spoiled and immature the whole time, it was pretty obvious that Triton will get tired of her irresponsible and headstrong behavior. Pocahontas didn't have a mother, but she never ran away from home, nor was she spoiled... Neither Cinderella, Snow White, Belle...
Her desire to give up her home and voice was not amazing, but stupid. She never thought how her family or subjects will feel after she deserts them. And making a deal with the sea witch? If she was slightly smarter, she'll know that's a bad idea...
As for the friends, in the series Ariel seems to have a lot of friends... On the other hand Melody could have gone in town and make other friends... but she never did because she wasn't brave enough...
And do you really need a sigh to understand that Morgana's evil? She looks evil from miles away. You don't need to be a genius to realize that.
And of her parents did not understand her and did not listen to her, does that make them as bad parents as Triton?

YES IT DOES make Triton, Eric, and Ariel bad parents! Ariel was trying to show her family and subjects that humans aren't so bad. Ironic how your calling Ariel selfish, spoiled, and immature when you love Peter and he was even more selfish, spoiled, and immature. Pocahontas didn't have any place they could run away to, Belle had her father who understood her. Snow White and Cinderella are just too positive and according to their books they made a promise to their fathers that they'd stay with together as a family. Even though that was something stupid for them to do. If you have seven daughters it really doesn't make a difference if one of them is missing. Also considering you count friends in the series but in your pick of the prettiest mother you didn't include Athena since she's from a sequel. If there was someone you loved and wanted to be with, wouldn't you want to be with them no matter what? I know I would.

Ever think maybe Melody did go into town and the kids know how she's weird and made fun of her. Even if she didn't she was probably unable to because the gates were guarded. She couldn't sneak into town through the sea because she could go in her swimsuit. As for Morgana what about the whole don't jude a book by it's cover. She seemed like a nice women the way she was acting to her. So your saying no matter how a person acts if they're ugly or weird looking they're evil. Both are smart just because they made mistakes doens't make them stupid if it did than your calling alot of heroines stupid.

Peter is a child. Ariel, according to her words is not a child anymore. Then why is she not acting like an adult?
Oh yes, it does make a difference if one of your daughters is missing. Especially if she the daughter you favor the most...
For the love of god, are you really making an argument with a pick I made months ago? I did not include Ariel's mom, because I generally don't include sequels in the stuff I post. And the reason for this is because I hate sequels. But as much as I hate them, they were still made, so unfortunately I cannot completely ignore them. But if I include somebody, or don't include them in a pick i make is entirely up to me.
I won't chase after a guy I barely know, and leave my family and home for him, especially is I am only attracted to his looks, and know nothing of his personality.
I think Melody just didn't try to make any friends. Or maybe she tried and failed because she's just not that cool.
And the way you're defending Morgana, almost sounds like you believed she was good until she finally revealed her true motivations and intentions to the characters. Indeed, she looked like a reliable person... :/

I'm not saying She was reliable I'm just saying your judeing someone by their looks. As for bringing up a pick get use to it sister we do that here. Triton never favored his daughters he only favored the voices. Also your the one who started this not me because you didn't bother to vote and you just had to insult them.

It is my opinion, this is what people on this site do, they state their opinions. And yes, I'm not bothered to vote, because I don't think either of them had a good reason, and that is again my opinion on the matter. And I want to share it with you, because you want to see peoples' opinions, that's why you posted the pick in the first place. So get used to negative opinions as well, not everybody here praises Ariel and Melody as if they are the best...

I agree with BelleAnastasia, those parts I read that is. However, no matter how flawed Ariel is she is way better character than Melody. And Triton is good parent

When did this become over who's a better character? This is about who ran away from home for better reasons.
