I'm like this.. If someone says that this is their "private space" and "off limits" I wouldn't do it. What Belle did is the equivalent of opening her boyfriend's cell phone, and reading all of his text messages. Like, what a super invasion of personal privacy!!!! Would Belle have liked it, if this action was what was done to her? I'm guessing not.

I began to lose all of my respect for Belle right after this moment. Even children keep diaries, and have designated private spaces somewhere. Based on this, Belle would not even respect children.

^Idk I think you're being harsh and not taking circumstances into account, I mean Beast literally had no respect for Belle at that point and was literally a big scary monster keeping her prisoner against her will. He cared very little about what SHE wanted or for HER personal space ("you'll come out or i'll break down the door!") so if Belle thought that going into the West Wing could somehow help her to get the Beast to set her free, I don't blame her at all. She was in a desperate situation.

^^Lmao she's just curious, why judge her very harshly to have curiousity like most of other DPs have? Beside the Beast and servants never told her why the West Wing was forbidden, made her even more curious to know what's on inside.

i respect someone else's privacy and home rules. She had no right to go there especially when she has been told not to go there. You could approach the subject in various ways. She could have waited to ask why it is forbidden or asak the servants about it to have an idea first. Going behind back was pretty stupid especially when you have learned it is an enchanted castle. Being curious is good but not at the cost of harming or invading someone's privacy.
On top of it, she wasn't satisfied with only seeing it She removed the lid to touch it. What if it would have made the spell permanent!

Agreed with the others- Belle doesn't owe Beast her love or her time (including feasting together) but she wasn't entitled to invade his personal space, the one place that was off limits to her. Snow, Ariel, Merida and Aurora are constantly called morons for trusting the wrong people (or in Aurora's case, a spell that wasn't even her fault) when two of those were done in emotional angst (Ariel, Merida) and two were just naive young girls in love (Ariel, Snow), while Belle has no excuse for doing something that foolish and unnecessary, especially for someone as widely regarded as intelligent as she is. What he ate her? What if touching the rose turned HER into a beast? What if an even worse monster was guarding the rose?

I think people let her off the hook just because it didn't turn out badly for her (Snow died, Elinor almost died, Ursula almost won). It's hypocritical too, considering Gaston had also barged into her house before.

I'd have just waited till we'd gotten used to each other and he trusted me enough to tell me when I asked.

Not so much because Beast said it was forbidden, but because I'd be terrified lmao. I'd assume he was in there. It always creeps me out when I'm watching the movie, just knowing that the Beast is watching her at that point.

@Princesslullaby: Your argument would work for me if the scenario in which Belle's curiosity about the West Wing was first piqued AFTER the beast had demanded that she attend dinner. But the decision Belle made to invade his privacy happened BEFORE he invited her to dinner. Belle had already made up her mind, and she could have-- as Anukriti put it--- asked a whole lot more questions of Cogsworth, Lumiere, and Mrs. Potts about what "why it was off limits." Is there a spell up there, similar to the one you're under, Cogsworth?

And Belle removed the glass jar over the rose -- which she could have left in place. That's not just snooping, anymore. That's tampering.with some one else's stuff! Curiosity is one thing. Tampering with someone else's personal belongings is rude.

^I feel like people "let her off the hook" because she's literally a prisoner searching for answers about what's going on. I really think you guys are all super harsh on her. she's being oppressed and chained by the Beast, why should she have any respect for someone who, at that moment in time, was treating her so horribly?! like, if someone kidnapped you, locked you up in their home, and treated you like crap, would you be like "can't go into this room, don't wanna disrupt their privacy"??! this is on the border of victim blaming for me considering belle's situation. she was looking for answers and a possible way to escape.

@Wavesurf-- what are you talking about? she went into the west wing AFTER dinner. she only asked him about it before, and it was a natural question to ask because he told her she couldn't go there. she wanted to know why. doesn't mean she was going to go in. I would have asked the same thing. what if something horrible was in there that could kill me? i'd want to be prepared. but she actually GOES into the west wing AFTER dinner.

^You could escape the house like Belle tried to do in the live action version--- through a window. Belle didn't do that? If she was ALL about escaping, then she could have tried to exit instead of stay for dinner.

I don't get your ire. If Belle was WORRIED for her own safety, she should have left the area. Not dawdled around and decided to snoop in someone else's personal stuff. It wasn't like the beast watched her 24/7. And Belle totally snuck right by Lumiere out in the hall.

Belle could have left. Easily.

I so agree with Mongoose XD I'd be terrified in that castle! I wouldn't dare to leave my room especially after the Beast's "invitation" for dinner.

@wavesurf- at first, she was snooping to find some answers about what was going on in the castle. I really have zero sympathy for the Beast considering his actions. she ran out when pushed to do so. belle, at FIRST, was trying to reason her way out. she WANTED to keep her promise until the Beast screamed at her to leave.

^Belle broke the house rules first. The beast didn't leave Belle in the prison cell. He gave her a proper room.
He is abusive in demanding that she come to dinner. But other than that, he did her no other affront.

Belle decided that his decision to keep his life private ( since they had "just met") wasn't enough for her. I blame Belle, and this scene and her self-righteousness after the wolf attack always angers me.

^Ah. Well, then. Abusing someone else just because you have been abused sounds morally correct to you.

It doesn't sound correct to me. What Cinderella did-- by taking the high road with her abuser-- is what I would do.

I disagree with Princesslullaby, here. Belle has always angered me ( because of her choices) ever since I was little child. To me, Belle is a snob, and deals out mistreatment the same as when other people have done it to her.

This doesn't make her exceptional to me at all.

^......are you honestly saying Belle abused Beast? lol are you serious? besides I wasn't saying "abuse for abuse", I'm saying I don't hold it against someone for not holding anothers opinion/values in high regard when said person has taken away their FREEDOM and prevented them from (potentially) ever seeing the only person they love in the world again. and 'taking the high road' is what *you* would do and that's fine, but why should everyone else be the same?
you REALLY think a monstrous beast manhandling and taking an *elderly* man prisoner who was simply looking for safety (and overall treating him like scum) & then holding the same man's daughter prisoner, shouting at her and acting overall disgusting is on the same level as Belle entering the West Wing? If so then I have nothing further to add to the debate as I have no words.

Victim blaming would be more criticizing her for breaking her promise by running away because of his tantrum (which you can't really blame her for THEN because he was being terrifying and unpredictable... but again, some foresight would have maybe helped her think of this potential danger). She chose to go somewhere possibly dangerous for no reason other than to satisfy her craving for excitement. She didn't look worried or scared at all by that point and wasn't concerned with trying to escape, which would be reasonable. I'm not meaning to be harsh, I just dislike that she did it and gets excused for it in universe and by the fandom while the other princesses get blamed for their mistakes.

And no, I wouldn't go in their room. If I was kidnapped I'd definitely stay as far away from them as I could and do whatever I could for my own safety, which to me means not doing anything I know would provoke their anger (especially since if I don't want my privacy invaded, I wouldn't invade others'). It's not about hurting his feelings, it's about using common sense and caution in a risky situation. I've lived with a very unpredictable and often scary adult before and I did whatever I needed to to protect myself.

completely agree with Mongoose09. Belle never got anywhere CLOSE to abusing the Beast. Entering into the West Wing is NOT abuse. Invasion of privacy? yes. ABUSE?!?!?! no.

I'd be too scared haha. I could only do it if I knew the Beast was going to be out for a while, and even then I'd be terrified of what I might find.
