I began to lose all of my respect for Belle right after this moment. Even children keep diaries, and have designated private spaces somewhere. Based on this, Belle would not even respect children.
On top of it, she wasn't satisfied with only seeing it She removed the lid to touch it. What if it would have made the spell permanent!
I think people let her off the hook just because it didn't turn out badly for her (Snow died, Elinor almost died, Ursula almost won). It's hypocritical too, considering Gaston had also barged into her house before.
I'd have just waited till we'd gotten used to each other and he trusted me enough to tell me when I asked.
And Belle removed the glass jar over the rose -- which she could have left in place. That's not just snooping, anymore. That's tampering.with some one else's stuff! Curiosity is one thing. Tampering with someone else's personal belongings is rude.
@Wavesurf-- what are you talking about? she went into the west wing AFTER dinner. she only asked him about it before, and it was a natural question to ask because he told her she couldn't go there. she wanted to know why. doesn't mean she was going to go in. I would have asked the same thing. what if something horrible was in there that could kill me? i'd want to be prepared. but she actually GOES into the west wing AFTER dinner.
I don't get your ire. If Belle was WORRIED for her own safety, she should have left the area. Not dawdled around and decided to snoop in someone else's personal stuff. It wasn't like the beast watched her 24/7. And Belle totally snuck right by Lumiere out in the hall.
Belle could have left. Easily.
He is abusive in demanding that she come to dinner. But other than that, he did her no other affront.
Belle decided that his decision to keep his life private ( since they had "just met") wasn't enough for her. I blame Belle, and this scene and her self-righteousness after the wolf attack always angers me.
It doesn't sound correct to me. What Cinderella did-- by taking the high road with her abuser-- is what I would do.
I disagree with Princesslullaby, here. Belle has always angered me ( because of her choices) ever since I was little child. To me, Belle is a snob, and deals out mistreatment the same as when other people have done it to her.
This doesn't make her exceptional to me at all.
you REALLY think a monstrous beast manhandling and taking an *elderly* man prisoner who was simply looking for safety (and overall treating him like scum) & then holding the same man's daughter prisoner, shouting at her and acting overall disgusting is on the same level as Belle entering the West Wing? If so then I have nothing further to add to the debate as I have no words.
And no, I wouldn't go in their room. If I was kidnapped I'd definitely stay as far away from them as I could and do whatever I could for my own safety, which to me means not doing anything I know would provoke their anger (especially since if I don't want my privacy invaded, I wouldn't invade others'). It's not about hurting his feelings, it's about using common sense and caution in a risky situation. I've lived with a very unpredictable and often scary adult before and I did whatever I needed to to protect myself.
