Well, for the first one it's kind of impossible for a Disney Princess to be the Villain. I mean sure, they can be a sort of anti-hero but every story is going to have a clear protagonist and antagonist. And these roles have their clearly defined definitions of Princess and Villain. It's much the same as how while Hans is a Disney prince, he's not a Disney Prince.

As for the Ariel one , and this is just the way I interpret it, but the main thing that makes me think she does the transformation just for Eric is the lyric change in Part of Your World. In the first appearance of the song, when she's enamored by the idea of the human world she concludes with "Someday I'll be, part of that world." However, after saving Eric she says "part of your world", signifying that her obsession has changed from the human world to Eric. So I very much think she becomes human exclusively to be with him since that's basically what the reprise is saying.

I disagree with both of them.

Ariel changes her obsession to the human world to Eric only a few times after she saw him for the first time. She was determined to leave sea until he against her father happens after she saw and save Eric, show that she wants to be human bc of him. Previously she just dreams to belongs in human world. So I'm not surprised if people said Ariel leave her sea life just for a man. There are more princesses that are more empowering than her.

I don't think it's a good move to made a Princess to be a villain just to prove that Princess isn't always nice, kind-hearted and befriended animals. I'd prefer the Princess to be more than just kind, like a spunky, flawed, stubborn Princess, rather than made an evil Princess. Maybe it's still possible to made an anti-hero Princess, or a Princess that was misunderstood as villain, but not the real evil one.

This. I staunchly disagree with everything Sparklefairy and Aang_Lite have said about Ariel, because, based on the movie, what they've said about Ariel simply isn't true at all. Once on land, Ariel doesn't spend all of her time staring at Eric. Ariel drops herself upside down over a moving carriage, trying to see why "it works." Ariel also pulls the puppets off of an actor's hands, because she "wants to know" why they are moving so excitedly. During this period, Ariel barely pays much attention to Eric, and is basically dragging him along through the whole marketplace...while she EXPLORES the world above the sea. Even while Ariel is dancing with Eric, she is staring at "her human feet" most of the whole time, because she is "so happy" to be dancing on human legs!

And, yes, I agree with Disnerdtobe. Merida and Elsa both are "examples" of extremely flawed characters, who have "darker personalities" than average, and are more ruthless in their decision-making. Merida and Elsa aren't outright villains, but they are as close to having a "princess" become as "mean" and as "cutthroat" as typical Disney villains.
