Well, Elsa IS A QUEEN, and I got a good chance to see what that was like. It was AWFUL. Elsa isn't a great queen. But I don't really think ANY of the girls in the DP lineup would be good queens save Aurora.

I think after seeing Merida calm the suitors that she could [possible] make a good queen.
I'm going with Jasmine. She just seems to care more about herself, I suppose. (I'll probably regret saying that, but that's just how I see her right now.)

I don't really know of anyone who would help her in being a queen. She's nice and can talk to animals but she's incredibly naive. Merida has Elinor to teach her (who is an awesome queen) and she has shown to be diplomatic when she reminds the lords of their history together. Besides, the creators pretty much stated that eventually she will be queen.

But then there is Anna and SnowWhite you are naïve and a little on the dumb and gullible side.

- She'll always run away if there are problems and never want to solve them, leaving the problems to her very own true love sissy.
- She's very listening to her 'trusted' advisers even though they could be wrong or evil.
- She doesn't want to interact with other kingdoms whom she despised... personally???
- And last but not least, if she's really cross, she could kill them on purpose or accidentally.

Though in the movie, she's always right, she's not a good example of being a Queen. The others??? Ahem, we haven't seen them as a Queen, right? Who knows if they can be great Queens? ^^

Tygers_Eye picked Ariel:
Why is Merida in the lead? She learns from her mistakes by the end of the film, is shown to be willing to compromise between her personal desires and responsibilities, and we see her manage to settle impending war after having no prior experience using diplomacy or public speaking. Her mom has given her more time on marriage and the two are on much better terms, so she'll only continue to learn more from her instead of less. I think Merida will do fine.

Elsa also. I rag on her a lot, but she learns her lesson by the end. I can't stress that enough. She starts off responsibility-ducking, problem-fleeing, etc. But she learns better by the end and we see her rule and interact with her subjects just fine by the closing credits. She can only do better from there.

Ariel, on the other hand, doesn't learn by the end. As various online reviewers have pointed out: "Ariel wants something, there are obstacles, she gets her way by the end." Ariel is constantly shown ducking responsibilities (missing rehearsals and her concert), ignoring people when it isn't interesting to her that moment (Flounder in the sunken ship, Sebastian at any given moment, Triton, etc), recklessly rushes off to do what she feels like that second with no thought to the consequences or gratitude for people who rush to bail her out, etc. And in the end, she's rewarded for it. Daddy saves her from Ursula, Eric defeats Ursula, Daddy gives her legs like she wanted, and she gets everything she wanted without having to learn, grow, change, compromise, sacrifice, or put other people's well-being before her desires.

AudreyFreak picked Elsa:
I original said Rapunzel because: psychological damage, prone to bouts of self-centered defiance when she can't have her way, and trust me, Punz, you're never going to have your way when you serve a whole city. She's sweet and adorable, but you can't be an efficient ruler or diplomat on cuteness alone.

But I had to chance my vote because we actually SEE Elsa as queen, and there's a lot more evidence of her lack of good leadership (not that I wholly blame her) than Rapunzel's. She runs away at the first sign of trouble and blames others when she panics. We see a very cold (no pun intended) side to her during "Let It Go" when she openly admits she doesn't care about her kingdom anymore, and the more I analyze that song, the less I respect her as a ruler for it. It's a very selfish, defiant song when you look past the glittery, romanticized shallow level of the lyrics. Ariel gets hatred for running away from her kingdom (even though she wasn't even the heir) but Elsa is admired for that exact same thing. I think she and Anna need to rule together or Elsa needs to find a husband who would be a more suitable ruler to help her.

And yes, why is Merida losing?? Why is everyone always judging her for her one mistake she completely tried to fix (and did)? That was the whole point, she realized what a selfish brat she had been. Even Ariel gets more forgiveness than she does, and don't even get me started on Flynn.

I don't see why on earth Ariel would make a better queen then Merida in the end faces her responsibility, something I would never see Ariel doing. She was able to calm the suitors, accept her place, fix everything in the end and was able to face responsibility, none of these things I could ever see Ariel doing. Overall, I agree with Tygers_eye, I just think Ariel would make an awful queen.

WHY is Merida still tied for first???

We see in the movie that she learns from her mistakes, acknowledges that she can't have her way all the time, accepts responsibility for her actions, and shows a willingness to put her personal desires aside and do what she needs for other people (like marry one of the suitors even though avoiding marriage is why she causes problems in the first place, and admits a complete mea culpa for her mother being cursed).

If she never learned her lesson, I could understand, but she does. Why are people still applying her pre-character development decisions with post-character development actions??

Tygers_Eye picked Ariel:
Persephone: At least I use evidence from the film to back up my opinions. The "many other articles that say otherwise" are generally very poorly written, poorly supported, and make vague general statements like "well, she cares about her family" without using direct evidence from the film to back up those claims.

You call Merida "very selfish and bratty," which she is... during the start of the movie.

By 2/3 of the film, she tells the lords and the suitors to their faces that she's been selfish, that she now understands how one selfish act can change the fate of kingdom, and is willing to do what it takes to amend her mistakes and mend their bond. She uses the diplomacy, public speaking, and knowledge of her kingdom's history that her mother taught her to quell the fighting and restore peace and comradeship between the lords (on her first try, no less!). She's willing to choose a suitor to end the escalating fighting, even though avoiding marriage is the very reason she caused problems in the first place.

Also, while she starts off the film blaming everyone but herself for poisoning her mother, at the very end she says to her mother's face: "I'm sorry. This is all my fault. I did this to you. To us... You've always been there for me. You've never given up on me. I just want you back. I want you back, Mummy." Selfish and bratty? I'd say she's learned her lesson by the end.

If you don't like Merida? That's fine, but at least acknowledge the character development she goes through and the lessons she's shown to have learned on screen, before you accuse her of being a bad queen just because she's "selfish and bratty." We see that she demonstrates competent queenly skills on-screen, and grows out of her immaturity by the end of her film.

Ariel is very selfish, shortsided, immature and irresponsible. I don't think she would be a good queen at all.

Elsa was just very scared, like she's always been. Because of her parents, she was scared of her powers so when she ran away, she was only doing it to protect everyone. But by the end of the movie, she comes back and accepts her responsibility as a queen. She even starts handling some problems like canceling business with Weselton.

As for Merida, she starts of as selfish and she doesn't want to accept her duties, but throughout the movie, she changes. She manages to calm down the lords and reminds them of the history of their kingdom. By the end of the movie, she learns from her mistakes and she becomes a mature young lady.

In conclusion, both of these princesses proved that they would be better rulers than Ariel. Ariel didn't accept her duties or learn from her mistakes by the end of the movie. She got a happy ending without learning anything at all.

Well, we saw Elsa and Ariel as Queens and I think they handled it pretty good. Yes, Elsa is scared for her powers but she also seems educated and regal and she's been preparing her whole life to be a Queen so she sure must know what to do.
Though there is a big difference between Queen Consort and Queen by blood.
Tiana, Snow White (since she went to her Prince's kindgom), Belle, Ariel (since she isn't in her own kingdom), Cinderella and maybe even Jasmine since Aladdin would become the next sultan (yeah, that's the sexist thing).
And I'm pretty sure Aurora will be a Queen Consort too since she wasn't taught how to rule.
Elsa is truly a Queen by blood.
Merida could be a Queen Consort too if she married a Prince from an other kingdom, plus she has 3 brother and in those times the sons would get the kingdom.
Anna could marry a Prince and become a Queen Consort or make her own palace/kingdom and be a leader Queen, or maybe she just stays there with her sister.
Pocahontas could be the nest leader after her father but I'm not sure about that. And I can't say anything about Mulan since there is no chance she will be Queen unless the Emperor gives her a part of his kingdom to rule.

As for Tygers_eye and Sk8r_grl, just ignore their comments. Tygers_Eye ignores my comments about Tiana ( her favorite DP, and a princess I mainly dislike). Sk8r_grl and I agree on some things, but not all. Opinions are varied. Don't let it hurt your love for Ariel. Hatred for Ariel is not hurting my love for Ariel, any longer. Tygers_Eye picked Ariel:
Persephone: You haven't addressed what I said about how Merida changes and grows through her movie. I gave specific examples from the film to show that she grows out of her selfishness and brattiness, which I use to explain why I think she would make a better queen.

I also explained why I think Ariel would make a poor queen. Why I think she's selfish, bratty, skips out on her responsibilities, and avoids taking responsibility for her actions. She constantly skips out on her princess duties like showing up to royal rehearsals or concerts (which Sebastian reveals are repeat offenses), constantly ignores people when she's not interested in what they have to say (like when Flounder tells her he's scared in the sunken ship), blows off the advice of others (like when Sebastian warns her against seeing Ursula), and recklessly gives into every impulse (like seeing Ursula because she wants her prince and is mad at her dad).

And yes, I don't think she learns or grows by the end. Sebastian, Flounder and Scutter all scramble to help her when she's human, Triton takes her place in Ursula's contract, and Eric defeats Ursula for her. And in the end, she just goes back to mooning over Eric like nothing happened, doesn't apologize to her father for all the worry and trouble she put him through, and Triton just gives her her way.

A girl who constantly "forgets" her responsibilities, ignores the advice of others, recklessly gives into every impulse no matter how dangerous (whether it's signing a Sea Witch's contract or driving a horse over a cliff), doesn't accept fault for her actions (tells her dad "I didn't mean to! I didn't know!" when confronted with what she's done, sees her father's transformation thanks to a contract she willingly signed and instead of saying: "What have I done?" completely blames the Sea Witch with: "YOU MONSTER!"), doesn't think about or deal with the consequences of her actions, and in the end never apologizes or acknowledges that she did wrong, doesn't make a good queen to me.

Again, you don't explain WHY my opinion that Ariel would make a poor queen is wrong. You don't acknowledge or refute any specific examples from the film that I gave. You just throw vague general statements like "other people have written articles" and "it's just your opinion." I gave examples from both films to back up my opinion. I think Merida and Ariel both start off selfish and bratty, but Merida grows out of it whereas Ariel gets bailed out and learns nothing. If you're not doing the same, then you are indeed "arguing with a wall." You're just throwing rubber balls at it and wondering why they bounce off.

@Tygers_Eye... Ariel learned her lesson. That's why the last words in the movie (besides the singing) are "I love you Daddy." She also says, "Daddy, I'm sorry! I didn't mean to. I didn't know..." She didn't ignore Flounder, she was being adventurous and he was being a guppy. But she did end up saving his life. She may have forgotten about the music rehearsal, but that doesn't mean she's horribly irresponsible. Ariel was never rude to Sebastian. And anyone who has watched The Little Mermaid should have noticed that the two eels convinced Ariel to go to Ursula. She refused at first. She told them to go away. The eels are hypnotizing with their yellow eyes, don't you think? Besides, her father blasted apart all her valued possessions a minute before. Ariel was just upset and sobbing about it. That's why she went to Ursula to be turned into a human. Even at Ursula's place, Ariel was reluctant, but the sea witch kept convincing her, so she agreed. Did you not see the part where Ariel signed the contract? She looked away and her face was scrunched up when she signed it. Ariel does change throughout the movie. It's an amazing movie. And Ariel is only 16, how could she be a good queen anyway?

Sk8er__grl picked Ariel:
quishy11 Okay, I had to comment. I know I should leave it to Tygers_eye but I have a lot to say. Ariel did NOT learn her lesson. She doesn't say, "daddy, I'm sorry, I'm sorry for everything! It was a ll my fault. Basically just what Merida said to her mother. But no! She's still convinced she's the perfect little girl who did nothing wrong, so what does she say? "I didn't mean to, I didn't know! We all knew that she knew just fine what her consequences were. She saw the millions of lives Ursula took away, and she did it anyway. Expecting her father to fix it for her. Even when she realizes that her father has now become Ursula's slave she still passes the blame to someone else by saying to Ursula, "You monster' How on EARTH does that signal that she "learned her lesson" She never owns up to anything she does! When she says "I love you daddy" It didn't mean, "I'm sorry daddy" It meant, thank you for turning me into a human! Now I'll leave you forever! "Teehee!" Before he gave her everything she wanted she treated him with no respect and said he was reprimanding her.

Her being so called "adventurous" is the same thing as getting Flounder almost killed. She brought him along and even when he wanted to leave she made him stay anyway. It's not saving him if she made him come in the first place, it's just not killing him.

I watched the Little Mermaid sir, and the eels did not talk her into doing it. She wanted to do it before anyone else said anything. And your theory on the Eels hypnotizing her makes no sense, because first you say that she was talked into it, then you say this. She wanted to be human before she got there, because she was reckless and only thought of herself.

Her going to the witch because her father destroyed her stuff is no exception to what she did. My brother just drained the battery to my laptop, now should I run away from home? NO. Because I think before I do things like a sane person. Ursula convincing her is the same as the Devil convincing a human to sell his soul to him, why does Ariel get a free pass? Ariel should have just sobbed and got over it. Instead she can never look past her nose and her argument with her father was basically just, "I want to be human because I saw a hot guy and I don't care if you don't want me to be killed I'm 16! I'm not a child!" "TeeHee!"

She never changes. Regardless on whether it's a good movie or not has nothing to do with Ariel. And I'm sick of the argument that she was only 16. Snow White had to be a queen at 14 and I'm convinced she'd do better than Ariel. Ariel could be queen at 16 but she wouldn't take responsibility and would never listen to anyone. And THAT'S what I have to say. *Gasps for breath*
