First of all, the writers know very well that the majority of the fans LOVE Damon, and he's like the driving wheel of TVD. Can you imagine a TVD without Damon!? Plus, Damon died just in the last LJ's book..that was, like the tenth?! Lol. But, it could possibly be that somehow he died for her, but his death isn't complitely definitive or he didn't die at all. The only thing they can do, is maybe don't put Ian in like 2\3 episodes of S3 so everyone thinks that he died, and while fans are so depressing it shows how much Elena miss him and actually love him. 	Anna_JH picked Yes (but he'll come back somehow): Without Damon, there is no TVD. That's not a biased view. Damon is the most favoured character and if he were to go, the show would fall apart. I have a feeling Damon will put his life on the line to save Elena... and perhaps come back as human?
