How can Bolin be an Earthbender and Mako a firebender if they're brothers?

I'm not sure if this was ever addressed in the दिखाना (forgive me if it was), but how is this possible? I don't think I've come across another case like this anywhere in the अवतार universe.

I don't remember if they brought it up in the दिखाना but they'd have to have some Earth Kingdom blood and some आग Nation blood. Probably their parents were आग and earth.
